" I' ve never seen a race like th at before," Parker concluded. 14 Jun ior N atio n a l Fast qualifier Steve Rasmussen won th e fastest of th e two , six-la p Junior heat races, turning his six laps in three minutes, 51.873 seconds on hi s Staab Racing -backed Harley-Davidson. The Turlock, California, resident topped Co n ne cticu t's J ason Fletcher o n hi s Edm onds R a cing-backed Wo odsRotax and New H ampshire' s Brian Tillso n o n his experime ntal, singleport, du al ca rbu reted Ron Wood-tuned Woods-R otax. The second heat race was won by Redwood Ci ty, Californ ia 's Andy Tresser and his Woods-Rotax. Tresser beat Steve Raymond's Woods-Rotax a nd Steve Beattie's H arl ey-Davidson in the six-la p pe r. The scheduled 10-l ap Juni or National was stopped after th e th ird lap due to rain a nd was restarted minutes later. Rasm ussen led Ra ymond, J aime Aguilar, Fletch er a nd Danny Stanley wh en th e race was interrupted. Prior to the resta rt, Wood elected to cha nge tir es o n Tillson 's bik e, going to a cu t tir e in an effort to find more tra ction on th e damp oval. At the com p letion of th e first restarted lap (la p four), it was Kiser leading th e wa y ahead of Raymond a nd Fletcher. Tillson , mean wh ile, was . a t th e back o f the pa ck. After three of 12 sched uled ro unds, Tresser, 11th today, leads th e point standings, 40-37, over Stanley. N a ti o n al For th e first four laps th e 25-lap National saw a fierce battle for th e lead. From lap five on , this o ne belonged to Parker. T he Swa rtz Creek, Mich iga n, resident ended the first lap in fifth place. After two laps he was sixth a nd on th e th ird lap he was sevent h . That was as far back as he go t. By th e fourth la p , Par ker ha d moved up to fifth a nd a lap lat er he was in th e lead . For good. At th at point, Parker a nd his Bill Werner-tuned H arley started to ease away from th e dogfight beh in d him. Wh ile th e ot hers fou ght it ou t, Parker p ulled away, even tuall y lead in g by as much as five seconds. Wi th first place sett led, th e rea l race was for seco nd and a ll of six rid ers Springsteen, Carr, Morehead, J ones, Gra ham and Farris - took a tu rn a t t he posi tio n . " I abo u t T -boned (Ch ris) Carr ," Moreh ead said in retrospect, " It (the brak e lever) wen t to the gro u nd. I had to set th e bi ke up to m iss him a nd I ab out highsided. " Th is left Carr to finis h second, ahea d of J ones, who squeak ed ahead of th e o the r four a t the finish line - Farr is, Spri ngsteen, Moreh ead a nd G raham. Ca rr: " H e put in a co u ple of good laps a nd the five o f us slo wed each o ther down. You couldn 't run on e full lap using th e lines yo u wanted to use. " Jones: " H e ca n just find tra ction whe n th e rest of us can 't: It 's like he's go t some kind o f secret jelly in his tire or som ething." Springsteen: " It was just a diff erent ra ce (fro m the heat in which h e dominated). We changed some things after th e Camel Challenge th at helped me. It was pushing th e front and slid ing th e ba ck in th e Challenge. But we just didn't have enough to co m pe te wi th Scotty in th e main. It 's a co m bination of him and Bill (Werner) th at 's o n a roll right now ," P arker: " T ha t was th e fir st bik e we rode in practi ce. All we changed was the gearing. It just shows how goo d Bill (Werner) is. H e to ld me to just go with tha t bike becau se it would be th e best for th e conditio ns lat er in th e day.
