Bill y Whitley a nd Mik e Jones, winner o f th e second 125cc heat race, fought for seco nd d uring th e opening laps until J ones mad e it past o n lap four. T allon Vohland, was th e next to challe nge Whitley and he took third o n th e sixth lap, wh ile not far beh ind J eromy Bueh l was working on J ason Langford. Bueh l worked his wa y up to fourth by lap 10, then a lap la ter Jones went 0 [£ th e track and both Vohland and Bueh l go t by. " I got sideways in th e wh oops and we nt o ff, " sa id J ones. " I go t th e banners in my back wheel a nd lo st power a nd had no rear brak e." Buehl dogged Vohland for th e last few la ps and m ade th e pass just a fter th e wh ite flag £lew. " I wi ll get him (Step henson) befor e the season's over; I will wi n o ne," clai med J ones. " I hope not ," replied Ste p he nson. " 1 ca n' t blame him , he wants it like . , do. Brad shaw didn't p ut up a fight as Bayle sped a way, whi le a little further back Ward had broken a way from Ma tiasevich . " I just wanted to sta y in second and stay up, " said Bradshaw. " After ' passed him , I tried to ride very fast, a nd wh.en I kn ew I had a good lead I tri ed not to mak e a ny m istakes," Said Bayle. H e didn 't mak e any errors and sped away for a 12-second win . Bradsh aw , how ever , may have mad e th e m istake o f pl aying it too safe in second as Ward mounted a charge in th e seco nd half o f the race a nd reeled him in . T he two hit the face of the fini sh line jump sideby-sid e a nd Ward sai led a head wh en they cros sed th e finish line.
