Spain's Jordi Tarres, the two -time defending Trials World Champion, claimed his 13th consecutive victory at the U.S. World round in G lo be, Arizona. Tarres tops the world in Arizona By Kit P almer GLOBE, AZ, APR. 22 eeking hi s 13th consecutive World Ch ampionship Obs erved Trials Series win, Spain's J ordi Tarres came to the U.S. round of the series with fire in hi s eyes. But wanting to douse those flam es and put an end to T a rres' winning streak was Italy's Diego Bosis, wh o came within a gnat's eyelas h of acco mp lish ing hi s goal. Followin g .the three-loop, 16·section Wagner Cup event, T arres and Bosis had talli ed 19 points each, but after adding up each rider' s tie-br eaking cleans, Tarres, ridi ng a water- cooled Beta Zero , emerged on top wi th 41 cleans to Bosis' 37. " I am very happy to win here," said th e · defending two -time World Ob served Trial s Champion , T arres, " but I'm still trying to improve my riding, because Diego Bosi s is riding very well and is my nearest cornpe tition. My main concern is getting more points ahead of Diego." Despite finishing second aboard a S 10 factory-backed wat er-cooled Aprilia Climber, Bosis was not exactly happy with hi s fini sh. " I need to win - to beat Jordi," said Bosis. " I could have ga ined three points on Jordi; now I hav e lost three po ints. I have to bea t hirrn. " Fini shin g third wa s Finland ' s Tommi Ahval a, lik e Bosi s an Aprilia factory rid er, wh o fin ish ed 10 points o rr T arres' and Bosis' tall y, while Sp ain 's Amos Bilbao (46 points) and Italy's Don ato Miglio (47) rounded out the top five on th eir Fantics, Outclassed by the European riders who have totall y domina ted the sport of trials, wit h th e exceptio n of 1979 when American Bern ie Schreiber won the World Championship on a Bultaco , non e of the American riders in Arizona fini shed within the top 20.
