~ S R UPE CROSS AMAICame1 Supercross Series e Tallon Vohland (80) and Jeromy Bueh l (58) pulled awa y from the pack in the I25cc main event. Vohland held off Buehl for hi s first-ever sup ercross victory. 8 Larry Ward (17) rode with vision problems due 10 a heat race crash, bUI still managed to hold off Suzuki teammate Mike LaRocco to £inish fifth in the main, Tich enor and O 'Mara with J eff Ward still tryin g to move up. Wh ile Brad shaw had h is sig hts o n the lead, Bayle had sim ilar inte ntions and pa ssed Brad shaw just before the halfw ay poi nt. Soo n after tha t, Brad sha w crashed ju st befor e the startfini sh jump and fell well back. He wou ld finish ninth. On the same lap Bradshaw cras hed, Bayle too k o ver the lead from Mat iasev ich . Sta nto n h eld th ird wit h Kiedrowski fourth, and Larry Ward fifth . The or der of the top five didn 't change for the second half of the race, th ough no o ne cou ld let up. Matiasevich foll owed Bayle and found him using similar lin es. . " He was go ing faster through the sam e lines," Ma tiasevi ch said later. " He carried a little more mo ment u m through them than me." Unable to close the gap, Matiasevich found himself further hampered by the weather and track conditio ns. " T he trac k was rea lly tou gh . The humidity was a factor on my hands. They were o n fire the wh ole time," he said. " I think JMB (Bayle) was hold ing back in his qualifier for the ma in even t." At the end, Bayle won by about two seconds with Matiasevich alone in front of Stanton. Kiedro wski was fourth, Larry Ward fifth and La Rocco sixth. " T hose g u ys were goin g fa st ," Stanton said. " I pushed, bu t my hat 's orr to th em . It was a rough ni ght. The rain (earl y in th e night) and sunshine made it real hum id. You can' t wait for any of these g uys. JMB 's ridi ng great and Chi cken (Ma tiasevich) is riding well. I' ll hav e to dig down deeper and be read y for the next one." Kiedrowski had closed to within a few lengths of Stanton more than o nce during the race , but never go t by. '" tried a coup le of passes and thought they'd stick, bu t he'd come o n the insde of me," Kiedro wski said. "He was using a little different lin es than me. Toward the end of th e race he started ta king my lines." Kiedrowski was well in front of Larry Ward, no surprise given wh at Ward had been through. " I have a headache ," Ward said after a stupid move. You can 't win o n the first lap." Buehl said he " was comi ng ba ck from some tough races. , fell o nce in the middle of the race, It was real hot and humid ou t there ," And Vohla nd, after his first win of the year, said , '" mad e a coup le of mistakes but , came back. I'd like to win as man y of these as po ssible, , think about winning these every race." ex climbing orr his machine. " I got it right in the head and ' can 't see real good." Still, he wa s abl e to h old o rr La Rocco, who was involved in a minor incident with Kiedrowski when both tried to avoid th e fallen Bradshaw. '" had to go inside and Kiedrow ski went o utside ," LaRocco began. " He an d , landed at th e same tim e and , la n ded sidewa ys. It kn ocked me down," he said, adding , " It (the race) sho u ld have been mine." '" co u ld n' t get go in g, " J eff Ward sa id. " I had a good start and hit the first turn and go t bounced around. 1 sett led in and then cras hed halfway throug h. Once ' go t up there th e first fiv e g uys were gon e. Th er e was not h ing ' could do ." 125 Main There were no surprises in th e l25cc heat s with Stephenson easily winning the first and Mike J ones doing the same in the second. '" want to save my energy and beat Stephenson tonight," J on es, wh o 's finished behind his rival in all but one of the' 25cc Eastern Region events, said. "If 1 get a bad start, ho pefull y' can pass," Stephenson said. As it turned out, Stephenson had a lo t of passing to do . He and J on es fell halfway into the first lap and didn 't get re-started until the ent ire 22 rid er field had gotten pa st. Tuf Racing's Bill y Whitley was o u t front with Vohland secon d unti l the third lap wh en Vohl and took over. A lap later and J eromy Buehl moved int o second and those t~o pu lled away from the field. Stephenso n wasn 't about to give up, however, a nd passed riders everywhere on the tra ck. Ninth on the third lap , he mo ved up to sixth a lap later and into fifth o n the fifth lap. Two laps later he was into third and , though he wou ld try, he came up short of Buehl , mos tly becau se he bob bled with a few laps to go . " I fell down wh en ' was ca tch ing up," the th ird-pl aced Stephens on said . " I hi t a slick spot and bent my clutch lever. T hat's no excuse. T he other guys were riding way too fast. My first crash , was running third and tried to make . Resu lts 250 HEAT I: I. Dam on Brad.shaw (Ya m); 2. Jeff . Wa rd (Ka w); 3. J eff Stan ton (Ho n); -t.Keith Bowen {Suz): 5.
