~ MOTOCROSS 19th Annual Kawasaki/NMA World Mini Grand Prix ~ R yan Hughes (120) dominat ed in the 125cc Pro ranks by winning all four motos of th e stock and m odified classes. T he 250cc Pro classes wen t 10 Bria n Swink. Damon Huffman (5) outrode Craig Decker and Ezra L usk to win the prestigious Kawasa ki Race of Champions with a 1-2-1 tally. Decker finished second overall . 3-9 finis hes and Brian Deega n was fifth with a 7-4 tally. For th e Kaw asa ki Race of Ch ampions, II r iders we re se lec te d 10 com pe te on identica lly-prepared, boxstock KXBOs in th ree mOlOS. The riders, who are champions fro m the various NMA regions or champions from other sa nctio n i ng club s, switched bikes between rounds to make su re that no one had an unfair advantage. Decker holeshot the first moto , bu t had to co n tend with Huffman, Spud Walters, Rand a nd Jason Buzzee hot o n his tail. Lusk suffered a poor start. The positions stay ed the same u ntil th e last two laps when Lusk forced himself in to th e third sp ot and Huffman worked his wa y a ro und Decker for th e win. Decker finished second, wi th Lusk, Ra nd and Morgan trai ling a few seconds behind. Lusk shot OUI o f th e gale in th e second moto with Decker and Huffma n again doing battle, but th is time for seco nd p lace. Steve Ols on was fou rth with Morgan fifth . Lusk quickl y stretched out his lead as Huffman began applying pressure to Decker. The two riders went at it for several laps with Decker maintaining th e lead the ma jority o f th e time. Huffman soo n ch anged all of that as he slipped pas t the Team Green Kawasaki rider for the runner -up position as Lusk took an uncha llenged win. Leading into the final RO C mo to , Huffma n was the one to bea t with only th ree points. Lusk had fo ur a nd Decker had five, a nd in order to win th e event, Huffman would have to beat Lusk and Decker. If -Lusk were to win the fi na l moto and Huffman were to finish seco nd or worse, Lusk would ca p tu re the title. Huffman set thin gs in m o tion for th e final race wit h Decker a nd Lusk running two-three. O n the first la p Lusk went down in a tum that all but des troyed his hopes of winning. A cras h a few laps lat er p ut Huffman o ut of the race a nd enabled Decker to assume th e number two positio n. The Team G reen / Ans wer/Oakl ey/ S i I k o le n e / D u n I 0 p / B e ll / C ycl e Engineering-bac ked Huffman slowly pu lled away until he met th e checkered flag a nd ea rned th e overall ho nors. Decker p icked up second in front o f Morgan , Rand a nd Ol sen . " I knew I had it (t he champions hi p ) when I saw L usk o n th e side," Huffma n said. " I kn ew it wou ld be a tough class to w in because ther e are four reall y good gu ys. I figu red if I cou ld ge l good sta rts th a t I wo uld be able 10 do a good job." Team Green Kaw a saki ' s Robby Rena rd swep t th e In term ed ia te porti on of the BOcc ra nks. Carm ichael fi nished second in th e Mod ified, bu t could only manage a sixth in Stoc k. The 125 a nd 250cc Intermed iat e classes provided some of th e best racing o f th e three-day week end. Tom my Clowers, J oel Albrecht, Derek Natvig, Dave Castillo and And y Grider slugged it out in over a dozen races with Albrecht eventually coming o u t th e bi g winner. After falling in every mot o of Friday's competition the Answer/ Pro Circuit! Acerbis / Du n lop/ CT ilJoJo/S hoei / Designs in Mo tio n/ Bel-Rav/Tsubakisponsored Albrech t stayed up when it counted and won th ree OU! of the four classes. The on ly class Albrec ht did n't win, the 125cc Stock, fell to Yamahamo u nted Dana Wiggins. In tha t race Clowers was the ru n ner- u p ahead of Natvig, Albrecht and Morga. Unlike th e high ly com pe titive 125 and 250cc In termed ia te classes, G rider had a n easy time of winni ng the 500cc Non -Pro class. G rid er led nearly every lap of bot h mot os wh ere he edged out hi s competition with a perfect score. Brett Bierek's 3-2 ta lly ea rn ed hi m seco nd a hea d of Larry Lawrence's 23 a n d Kevin Yeager 's 4-5 . J a so n Williams was fifth with 5-6. T he Pro cla sses were a split between T eam Green 's R ya n H ughes and Brian Swink. H ug hes set th ings rolling in th e 125cc Stock a nd Modified cla sses wh ere he earned himself a pair of wins af ter sweeping a ll four motos, Yamaha's Phil Lawren ce was second in the Stock class a head o f J eremy McGrath, Swink and Mike Chamberl ain, but it was a d ifferent story in the Mod ified where Kyle Lewis, McGra th , Chad Pederson and Brett Sh umate trialed across th e finish line. Swink's outing aboard th e 250cc machin es was a lmost a near-perfect ven tu re as he topped three ou t of four mOlOS before Lawrence p ut a stop to his dominance. McGrath and Lawrence ran up from during every moto, bu t mechanical probl ems for McGralh and crashes for Lawrence kep t them in second and third place, respectively, for the two classes.
