Dal e Fra nk lin came out of retirement to win the inaug ural Formula Unlimited road race in th e WMRRA season opener at Seattle International Raceway, Premier Champion Bob Capistrant dominated the Mason-Dixon Trials Challenge on an immaculate 250cc Ducati. The event was formerly called the Spring Trial. DoUR gentrcw (Ya m ): and one "o ne" each . Jason's three " twos" to Marc'. one "two" gave J a !iOn first for the day . The mod ern event, run on a separate sevensect ion loop , drew a disappointing 37 entries for the first round of th e AMA Di strict 7 Trial> Series, The Expert ciass was typified by ciase competition th roughout the day. D istr ict 7 number two rider J im Palmer led after the fin t loop with fou r marks, Rob Toole followed in second wi th .ix mark>, despite a delay due to a drowned motor and broken starter shaft in the creek of section four. Afte r pumping the water fro m his motor . Toole reentered the fray without 'a starter, District 7 Champion Craig Fish a nd STRA number two Don Wre nn were tied for third at seven marks each. Pa lmer maintai ned a slim one-mark lead after the second loo p, whi le Fis h moved into second. Amother " five" in section fou r forced Tonie back to th ird p lace . The b u lk of h i. meager I I ma rks were earned in the tight a nd slimy section six . Wi ll Stoner, of Ohio, on a Triumph 200 Cu b, moved into second on the seco nd loo p. Co nsistent lo w scores o n the final two loo~ kept h im in seco nd for the day. Ohio '. BlII Gall oway, on an immaculate 250cc Greeves, rode consisten tly each loop to bea t out a steadily improving Warren Klei s by one mark for third place on the day. Craig KI""h completed the first loop in seco nd pl ace after a brilliant ride. However, th e ha ndicap of riding a 500cc Tri u mph twin in a class dominated by agile si ngles forced hi m back to fifth place, Virginian Pa te Keen. o n a '74 Honda TLI25, rode unchallenged to first place in the Modem Classic-A cia ss, H i. three clean rides in each of the mud-bog sections (three and six) stunned the other vintage riders. Dave Mankey, on a '72 O ssa 250 MAR , rode ccnsistern, single-digit loo p' to p ut a lock on .seco nd place, R ich Broo ks, on a nearly-new Montesa Cota 247, edged out Do n Pugh by three mark. to take third for the day . Lew Stretch, on a '45 Royal Enfield, and Sta n jakubaszek, o n a '57 BSA 500, were the so le en tra n t. in the Rigid a nd H eavyweigh t cia sses, r espectivelv. Both gamely struggled with the handicap. of low grou nd clearance and wide tu rni ng rad ii in what became a contest of sheer physical endurance. Lew eventua lly conceded the persona l con test for h igh -m ark honors to Sta n . Jim Van Sick le, on a 250cc Yamaha, took first in the Classic -Bclass by a 40-mark marg in over I 25cc Ho nda- mounted Mall Francy.
