Childress won the 125cc division, while McElroy to pped the 250cc class . Most of the day's action was produced by the 250cc A class. Wh en the ga te dropped for the start of the firs t moto, Robbie Taylor and McElroy ju m p ed into the early lead with Chi ldress, Mike Andrews, J im Chester, Kirk Johnson, J im Wallace, David Eller and Todd Ulmer in pursuit. Taylor was running hard in the ear ly stages of the race but McElroy and Childress were just too much for h im to handle. McElroy was the first 10 make a mo ve and he did it by passing Taylor over a double jump, while Childress followed suit a few turns later. T his set the stage for a one-onone d uel for the lead betwee n McElroy and Ch ildress. A ha lf lap later, Childress charged after McElroy and beat hi m exiting a tu rn. Chi ldress' lead, however, was short- lived, as McElroy retaliated over a big j u mp at the finish line area whe n he out-braked Chi ldress in the next turn. Chi ldress was relentless in hi s attacks o n McElroy, as the pair continued their dogfight. But the battle came to an end when Childress cras hed and dropped to sixth. All eyes were focused o n Childress as he bega n working h is way back up through the pack. He eventually spe d by Taylor and Kevin Bowles, who soon crashed whi le chas ing Ch ildress. Up front, McElroy enjoyed a comfortable lead, abou t 10 seconds over a Mike Andrews/ Chester feud over the J ru nner-up position. Andrews he ld conirol of second for mos t of the race, unt il Chester passed him on the seventh la p. When the checke red flag came out, it was McElroy comfortably out in front, foll owed by Ch ester, And rews and Childress. Andrews blew out of the gate and into the lead at the start of the second rnoto, with Taylor inches behind him. For the firs t half of the race, Andrews held complete control, as he stretched o ut his lead . However, Ch ildr ess was on the move as he too k over secon d and set his sights o n the leader. After three more laps, Childress was glued to Andrews' rear fend er and was ho t to pass him. Andrews p ut up a fight, but it wasn 't good enoug h to stop Chi ldress, who found a hole in the leader's defense to sli p into the number one position. Childress fin ished just ahead of Andrews at the fin ish. The battle for third came down 10 the wire between McElroy an d Chester. McElroy had control of th ird un til he fell on the Gatorbacks, letting Chester by. On the last lap , the two racers gave . it all th ey ha d, as they crossed the finish line al most side by side with the nod goi ng to McElroy . Kawasaki rider R o b by Neeley grabbed the ho leshot in both the 25 Plus class motos and ra n away to a I- I sweep. Whi le Neeley was cru ising o ut in front, T o ny Lee, Eddie Steele, Joel Co rdel1 a n d S teve Le wis squabbled over th e remaining positions, as they fin ished in that order, overal l. . In the 30 Pl us division, Neeley took the early lead in the first moto and captured his th ird moto win of the day .
