One of those to pass him was fellow Vet rider Mill er. Miller said that passing Ostbo got his adrenalin going to the finish for a fifth place overall and th e win in his class. A remo unted O stbo valiantly tried to catc h Mill er on the final rocky downhill bu t it was impossible; he had to sett le for sixth overall and second in th e Vets. "T hat was one National caliber race, I tell you ," said American Ho nda 's Miller. " I'm tired, I want to go to sleep. " The injured Searle managed to hang onto his bi ke and maintain his posi tio n for a six th p lace finish. Steadily working their way up "to the fro nt runners were Kadlec and Yamaha's Grant Pa len ske, Th e duo raced through the fin al section of the co urse with Kadlec taking Palen ske on th e downhill to edge o ut the Vet ride r for eigh th overall. Pa lenske earned a ninth pl ace and the win of th e Vet 250ccclass. The two top running Amateurs had a race going throughout the three loops. Jeff Kawell , on a Kawasaki . KX125, led through the first two loops with Vet rid er Mark Anderson, pilot ing an ATK 406, han ging tough to fin all y get Kawell o n the next to last rocky downhill fo r the Amat eur win. Kawell foll o wed h im in. Sen io r Bill Maxim follo wed T. V. Holmes until the first gas, then go t past the Seni or rider to set hi s own pace to fini sh first in the Senior class and 29th overall. T he 30th rider in was Open Amateur winner Jerry Byrd.
