Road Racer NOW A V AILABLE! ;III"''''''''''' AMA to update homologation rules A . .A.c.... ISSIJES cco rding to the AMA's Ron Zimmerman, the current road race homologation rules will undergo change in the wake of controversy stem ming from the use ol homologated magnesium Mikuni carbureto rs by Van ce & Hines Yam ah a at Daytona. "Obviously, we had a number of discussions down in Daytona about this subject, and we are preparing an update, and or clarification of ho mologatio n policy," Zimmerm an said. " We didn't anticipate that there wou ld be this much interest. We are planning further clarifica tion as to the date something can be used based on when it was approved, how long' a reasonable delivery date is, and what maximum prices are." T he controversy at Daytona erupted over the " ki t carbs" used by David Sadowski in winning the Daytona 200. The carburetors were ho mologa ted by the AMA prior to Daytona, so Yamaha was in the clear by using the carbs. The question, how ever, is not in their use, but in what the rule book cans: "readily avai labl e a t a reasonable cost in quantities sufficient to meet demand." But what is read ily available? Yamaha did no t have any carburetors avai lable for purchase a t Daytona, and this is what triggered Kawasaki team owner Rob Muzzy in to making a formal complaint. " My only rea l bitch is that I'd been talking to the AMA for three months about putting fue l injection on the Kawasakis ... ," Muzzy said. "T hey were tryin g to get away [rom having the one-off speci al carbure tor, and that cost and availability were the criteria. I had no problem with that. The problem was the price. What 's a reasonable price? I told them that I knew the carburetors Yam ah a were tryin g to hom ologat e were $3000-4000. But th ey (AMA) told, me from the beginning that th ere was no way those carburetors were goi ng to get a pproved - it was too much money. So I never proceeded with the fuel injection - based on the fact that they had n 't esta blished a cost and I knew it would cost' close to 3000 to do it. Then at the last minute - three days, I believe , before Speed Week they approved the Yamaha car buretors at 3000." Muzzy questions Yamaha's intent on the availability issue. " I understan d that it's difficu lt to say what is available," Muzzy said. " And the only reaso n I'm pushing this is because in my opinion Yamaha had no int ent to have those carburetors avai lab le. They didn 't even bring an extra set. I don 't feel they me t in good faith the intent of having those carburetors ava ilable." Yam ah a 's Tom Hal verson said that when Yamaha firs t decided to bring the OWOl s into the U.S. [or the 1990 season back in Sep tem ber of 1989, he obtained kit pa rt information fro m the factory an d ma de that information available to everyo ne who was inte rested in purchasing the bikes . "They (the carbure tors) were in the catalog and were readil y available," Hal verso n said. " Yama ha o n ly wanted to fill or ders . They didn't want me to order 10 and sell rive. Nobody chose to order thos e carburetors. I ordered a few set'S for Van ce & Hines and a spa re set for th e AMA. The other rid ers co u ld have gotten th em. We played by the rules the whole way, but I had the feeling at Daytona of being accu sed of doing som ething snea ky." Muzzy is planning to go ahead with his plans of fuel inj ecting the Kawasaki ZX7s, and the AMA is currently looking at creating a policy [or alternate induction systems. " We don 't have a policy for fuel injection other than the one that's alread y in the book that says you can use fuel injection if it comes on 'the motorcycle, ala Ducati," Zimmerman said . " We have indica ted to (Rob) Muzzy that we will develop a pol icy on fuel in jection." a Matchless G50, by about one and onehalf bike lengths." Qualex Inc., exclusive provider of Koda lux Processing Services under license [rom the Eastman Kodak Co., will sponsor the Sidecar class of the U.S. GP at Laguna Seca. " This race is one of the most challenging and interesting forms of motorcycle racing - visually, th ere' s more going on," said Francis Leahan, marketing director of Qualex. "The passenger plays a big part in keeping the motorcycle on th e road - which means great photo opport u nities. Once film is shot, whether by an amateur or a professio nal photographer, the next step is th e processi ng. Th e Qu a lex labs of£ering premium quality Koda lu x Processing Services provide excellent photo result'S."
