Kent Kunitsugu an d Nick Ienatsch rene wed
their year-o ld struggle for supremacy a t the
American Road Racing Association's third
race of th e season at Willow Springs In ternational Ra ceway.
- Kunitsugu, 1988 ARRAChampion, and
Ien a tsch , th e reigning n u m ber one plate
holder. met in two races thi s Sunday, with
eac h winning o nce.
T he du o faced off for th e first time in the
red-fl agged and restarted 600cc Superstreet
race, in wh ich le na tsch rode his Du nl op-shod
Vance & H in es T orrance Yam ah a FZR600 to
a decisive win over Kunitsu gu 's Michelinsho d Hollywood Yamaha FZR600. Ienat sch
turned his fastest lap ever in that race, a 1:29.2.

with David Deveau nipping Walt Holder for
fourt h at the checkers, a ll on Yamahas.

" My foot slip ped off the peg in turn eigh t
and I thou gh t it might be leak ing water,"
lenatseh said la ter. "While I was looki ng
down, Kent slip ped past me."
" I've got som e motor now," said Kunitsugu ,
" bu t I d idn' t upgrade the coo ling system so
i t's running hot."
Ienatsc h came back to wi n the next two races
of th e day , surviving a near-fall in downhill .

In the third ro und of the ARRA Miller High
Life Formula One Grand Prix Series, Barry
Burke put his Michel in -shod , Mitch Leonardt uned Yamaha FZRIOOO in to the lead on the
first hi p of the 10-lap race and held it to the
finish, turni ng lap times in the I:28-range.
" I cou ld have gone faster, but ' they were
giving me '+ 10' on my pit board so I thought,
'Why bother?'" said Burke. who was riding
with his right shi n ba ndaged from a mo untain
bike accident. Burke lat er won the 750cc
Superstreet race o n his FZR750 with Kunitsugu seco nd on his 600.

"That's the first time Barry beat me when
I didn 't cras h or my bi ke didn't break ," said
Graves. "T oda y, he beat me fair and square."
Kieffer 's mistake promoted Curt is Adams
to th ird place. which he would a lso hold to
th e finis h. The Suzuki rider had started on
co ld Dunlop slicks after miss ing the warmup lap , and the n was nearly inv olved in th e
turn eig ht mel ee which eliminated Richard
Moore and Peter Koc i on th e first lap.
Kieffer reentered the ra ce track righ t in front
of Kunitsugu 's fifth-p lace 600. In th e end. i t
was Kieffer in fourth by a narrow margin.
