GIIMf:t. SUPERCROSS SERIES Czechoslovakian Jan Hrehor finished one point behind Russell for third. Former National Enduro champ Terry Cunningham landed fifth overall. betw een ch ecks seven and eight, Hawkins began making up time on Russell and proved it by dr o pping six points to Russell 's seven , while both Hrehor and Hines carded eig h ts, With two special test sectio ns left in the enduro, Hawkins was just one ' point behind Ru ssell . At the next points-robbing check both Russell and Hawkins dropped seven poin ts (H re. ho r eight, H ines nine). The 12th and fina l check of the enduro would determine the o verall victor and the battle was between Russell and Hawkins. Before the section, though, Russell suffered a flat fro nt tire and he didn't have eno ug h time to cha nge wh eels. So Russell rode th e entire section with the flat. Desp ite the ha ndicap , Russell maintained the pace in the section to keep within sight of H awkins. As the course neared the end, however, R u ssell slowed dow n , th inking he was in a section tha t wa s co nsidered " free territory" where no chec k could be located. But, to Russell 's surprise, there was a check and he dropped two po ints more tha n Hawkins , thus losing the overall by one point. " It's pretty complicated to exp lain, but I feel that there was a check wh ere there shouldn't been one - in free territory" said Russell. " Bu t I had a good da y anyway and I felt I rode well. If either of the two protests are a llowed, then I will win it. I hate getting bea t on technica l terms." • According to Ro ger Ansel of the . AMA, a decision on the two protests won't be mad e u nt il at least a week an d a half followin g th e event .
