The big Suzuki got away from Ha ll and pitched him o ut of the seat , bu t he managed to hang onto the handlebars and kept th e bike o n two wheels. The force of the nearcrash bent the bik e's steering damper, and forced Ha ll to bring the bike in for an unscheduled pit stop. The Human Race Team took advantage of their arch-rival's misfortune and pulled out a two -lap lead. Suzuki rid er Smith went by Human pi lot Fenwick to regain one lap, an d at the end of two hours of racing HRT led with 79 laps to Team Suzu ki's 78. A steady rain began to fall j ust before the end of the second hour. Team Uno pitted immediately for rai n tires . and temporarily lost third p lace to RKN Racing. American Spirit remained in fifth while Team USS R (for "Underrated Summit Point Superbike Riders" ) proved to be good in the rain and moved up to sixth. It rained hard in vthe third hour, promptin g many teams on slicks to cha nge to street or rain tir es. Both th e Humans and Team Suzuki switched to ra in s shortly into the th ird hour. That 's when the trouble began for the-H uma ns. Bray had com p leted just three laps wh en he brought the bike back int o the pi ts wit h a loose fro nt brake assem bly. T ha t fixed , he then rode the next 40 minu tes with a nearl y flat rear tir e. " I kn ew th e bike wasn 't handling well, but since it wa s raining hard I could n 't tell for sure wh at was wrong," exp lained Bray. This serie s of problems allowed T eam Suzuki to put a lap on HRT during that hour. A cou p le of th e top teams had a lread y had problems and were o ut of co nte nt ion for a top finish even though they were still running. Hall 'n' Still Racing's Bruce Baldus crashed when an other rider fell in front of him during the initial rain in the first hour. Mid-South Racing was near the front of their class when water caused their bike' s ignition to quit in the back section of the track: A good battle was shaping up in th e Ligh tweight category. Kevin Rent zell was riding on e of hi s first races since being injured las t year. With Ren tzell -o n th e Raw Racing Yamaha FZR400, . the team led the class.
