more low-profile approach to spon
bike marketing in 1989. The'most
blatant result was th e delay of the RC30
superbi ke's arr ival to th ese sho res, but
a less obvio us o ne was Honda's decisio n to ren am e th e Hurricane the
" CBR" - a decisi on made to bypass
the insuran ce compa n ies' blacklisting
of the Hurrican e.
What the CBR600F really is, then ,
is the same ol d H onda Hurricane. with
a peaki er powerband being th e maj or
difference. Well , that and two new
paint schemes - ours was white with
silver h ighlights, and we feel it 's one
of the clea nest-looking street bikes
we've ever seen. with none of the " goa he ad -a n d- a rr es t-m e" graphics of
other sport bikes : "

Which is not to say it's a bad
motorcycle. Qui te the opposite, really.
Even though it's a comparably dated
design, the more powerful CBR is not
far out of step with the tim es, even in
road racing terms. Tom Kipp's showing in the 600cc Superspon final at
Daytona, wh ere he ran as high as
founh before cras h ing , proves tha t,
And in street term s, the CBR is even
better. At two doll ars less th an five
grand, it's less expe nsive th an both the
Ka wasak i and the Yam ah a , with o nly
the Suzuki Katana comi ng in slig h tly
cheaper.
If you're in the market for a good,
all-a ro und, middleweigh t street bike a t"
an affor da ble pri ce. th e CBR600F is as
tough to beat now as the Hurricane
was in '87.
