Ser ies po ints lead er Mat iasevich sai d aft erwards , " I 'm not thi nk in g a bo ut th e poi nts lead right now. I'm just going to each race like , was in 15th . I'm not worrying abo ut it. Right no w, l o we a lo t to my trai ner J eff Spencer. H e ' s be en keepi ng m e o n earth . Everytime I sta n to float away, he pops my ba lloon. Plus, my mechanic J erry Ca m p bell - all th ree o f us ha ve bee n wo rki ng reall y tight." 125cc Main Matiasevich (20) dives to the inside of Tichenor (6) for second p lace ear ly in the main. Tichenor eventually drop ped back and finished seventh. (Left to rig h t) j ean-Michel Bayle. Ward and Matias~vich celebrate on the rostrum. Matiasevich stretched his points lead to 21 over Larr y Ward. who placed fifth. 20 a nd po u nd ing; I think I had so me better lines th an Wardy, a nd I go t close eno ug h to whe re his roost was hittin g me. But I went into a bowl tum a nd hit a roc k, which a lmos t sent me down. Right th en he pulled o u t th at ga p I had cu t down." This ended wh a t mighr've turned into a di ce for th e lead . " It wou ld 've been a helluva race if I hadn't bobbled ," sai d Matiasevich . " I felt I cou ld 've ca ug h t him." Whi le Ward a nd Matiasevich were sailing way o u t in front, th e crowd's a tte ntion tu rned to th e th ird -pl ace rider, T iche nor, who was defend ing his position fro m a freigh t train of r iders: Sta nton , Ba yle, Kied rowsk i, Larry Wa rd, O'Ma ra and LaRocco. Sta nton chased T iche nor for th e nex t four la ps, tryin g to pass th e Suzu ki rider in every turn. But Sta nton ca me up s ho rt in eve ry attempt. G ett in g des p era te, Sta nton began tryin g to use diff erent lines to get arou nd Tiche nor. This strategy , however , backfired wh en Stanton motor ed to th e o u tside o f T iche nor in a turn , o n ly to lose hi s posit ion to Bayle; wh o do ve underneath Sta n ton. " It was a goo d race, but th e on ly problem was I co uld n' t pass," said Stanton. " I was in th ere a nd I was trying to get around Tichenor, a nd I would try a different lin e a nd try to pass him , and th en I would get passed. That's just the way the track was tonight; you just couldn 't get o u t o f th e groov e or you 'd get passed." Aft er displ acing Stanton, it was Bayle ' s turn at Ti ch en or. Ba yl e hounded the Suzuki rider for th e next two 'la ps and finall y found su ccess in a tight right·hander. " T he re was good racing go ing on ," said Bay le, " b u t , used up too much ene rgy trying to pas s Tich en or. I tried to ca tch Matiasevich after th at , but' was too tired." With five laps rernarmng , Kied ro wski and Larry Ward were mak in g a move to wards th e front, as well. Kied row ski even tua lly found th e hot lin e arou nd Stanton , th en Tich en or, fo r fourth , and Larry Ward wa s thi n king ab out doing th e sam e. At this point, th e top order was J eff Ward a nd Matiasevic h, . wh o were way out in front, fo llowed by Bayle, Kiedrowski , Tich enor, Stanton and Larry Ward. With two laps rem aining, Larry Ward foll owed Kiedrowsk i 's lin es around Stanton a nd Tich en or for fifth. T hen , T ich en or a nd Stanton almos t kn ocked eac h o ther out of th e race. As the y approached a lon g trip le j ump, T ich en or 's Suzuk i slid out sligh tly on th e tak eo ff, forci ng him , as well as Sta nton , to back off th e thrott le. Both riders lan ded well sho rt o f clea ring th e thi rd j u m p. As th e two riders struggled to regain th eir ba la nce, Stanton 'ma naged to inc h ahead o f T ichenor. '" cased th at tripl e so ha rd , so ha rd ," said T iche nor. '" went o ff th e jump to tally side ways a nd landed on th e face ' o f th e third jump. , hun my wrist a nd m y an kle a nd I cu t my tou gu e. , just wa nted to pull over right th ere a nd sto p , but I kept goi ng. " " He (T iche nor) got sq u irrely , a nd I lost my drive because ' was worried abo u t wh ere he was going to go, and , ca me up sh ort,' sa id Sta nton. " I passed him but, shoot, it took me th e whole ra ce." Moments la ter, J eff Ward crossed th e chec kered flag co mfo rta bly a hea d o f Matiasevich wit h both fists clinched high in th e air. Bay le finish ed all alon e in third , foll owed by Kiedrowski, Larry Ward , Stamon , T ic he no r, LaRocco, O 'Mara and Fish er. "I've been rid ing faster th an a ny body a ll year, it's just th at I've been having bad lu ck ," sai d winner J eff Ward. " I' ve been gett ing bad sta ns. It was a lot better tonight being o u t in Suzuki's J immy Gaddis, who had just returned to ra cing after breaking his wrist in H ouston in ea rl y February, jumped into th e lead at the start of th e l 25cc main but was feeling heavy pr essure from Kawasaki rider Kyle Lew is. However, Lewis, who had earlier won th e first heat race, was dropped to third by Gaddis' teammate Buddy Antunez in a section of whoops during the third la p. A few la ps later, Lewis slowed when he landed short over the triple jump and hun his back. This gave third to T y Davis, while settling into founh was Jerem y McGrath. Du rin g th e si x th lap, Antunez mo tor ed past Gaddis and soo n develo ped a mod est lead over hi s teammat e, wh o now had Dav is breathing down h is neck. H ow ever , th at o nly lasted for a few laps a nd ended whe n Davis crashed over a jump a nd dro p ped to midpack. That gave McGralh th e th ird spot a nd a clear shot a t G addis, wh o was ru nning seco nd . For the remaining eigh t laps, Gaddis a nd McGrath di ced tooth -and-n ail over second pl ace, while Antu ne z man aged to sta y in th e lead, clear o f th e feud b y a few bik e len gth s. McG rath tri ed every tri ck in the book to pa ss Gaddis, but th e Suzuki rid er held h is ground. Four laps from th e fini sh , lead er Antunez bobbl ed in the whoops, allowing Gaddis a nd McGrath to clos e in on him and with th e che ckered flag in sig h t, only a few in ch es sep arated th e th ree. The di ce for th e lead came to a ' nail-biting end with Antunez bare ly h o lding o ff G add is and McGrath across th e fini sh line. "I was just riding my hardest and tr yin g to red eem m yself from m y q ua li fier whe n I cras hed," said winner Ant u nez. "I'm really happy." " My wrist is sore, but I reall y wanted it (the wi n ) bad," sai d runner-up Gaddis. '" just had to go for it. It was a good race ." ex Results 250 HEAT 1: Larry Ward (Su z); 2.
