But due to o ur love o f motorcycling and h is worldwide promotion of o ur sport, I tho ug ht of him as a brother. Malcolm For bes was uniq ue. H is love of life was not j ust d ue to his wealth. It was . . . well, a lo ve of life and shari ng it with so ma ny. T he worl d will be j ust a IiuleIess rich with him go ne. Godspeed, my friend . Vic Ebbutt Seattle. WA A tri bute to Malcolm Forbes Dear Malcolm, there you were again. on the front page of our newspaper. but not the way we wanted to read itl You were gone. sudden ly and too soon. Over the years we've read about you and your daring escapades - in your high-flying balloons. and in your motorcycling adventures in far off places that most of us on ly dream about. You were our hero , in more ways than one. Recalling when we first met, I' ve got to crank back the calendar to the year of 1970. My late wife Shirlee and I were publishers of Motorcyclist ma gazine. We were on our way o u t of the office door to go to lunch , wh en the phone ra ng . Our secretary told me tha t is was Forb es magazine in New York callin g. Naturall y. we paused and I took th e call. It was one of your assoc ia tes ca lling, stati ng that " Mr. Forbes wants to buy your ma gazine." I rep lied. "A single issu e, a year's subscri p tio n . or the whole ball 0' wax ?" "The wh ole ball 0 ' wax ," he remarked. It was a soul-searching lunch for us. We had been approached before, to sell the magazine - with a visit from Bill Ziff, president of Ziff-Davis Publishing in New York . (Ziff wound up buying Cycle magazine from Flo yd Clymer. ) We returned the phone call with an affirmative answer. The day of your visit was a real highlight for us, and a tru e honor. Somewhat lat er we were na turally disappointed to learn th at you decid ed not to acquire a motor cycling magazine and. instead, learned up wi th our good dealer friend Hank Slegers in New jersey, opening your ultra-swank Slegers /Forbes motorcycle dealership. just prior to this, we sold Mot or cyclist to Petersen Publishin g Company.. Then. along came an inv ita tion to us. complete with round -trip pl an e tickets, to be am ong you r guests to attend the grand ope ning of yo ur new store. We advised you that we had sold the magazine. and that the invitation sho uld rightfully be sent on to Bob Greene. the magazine's new editor. Your generous reply was to also extend a n invitation to Greene, but you wanted us there as well. Wh at a lavish affair that was for all of us - rooms at the Waldorf-Astoria. a night voyage around Manhattan ab oard your "Highlander" yacht, and attending the official opening ceremonies of your new store. As is your style. it was all very im pressive and appreciated. All of us were very privileged guests! I also recall the Houston Astrodome motorcycle races during that era. In your own company plane you brought your family and store employees down to see th e races and the motorcycle show (of which I was co-promo ter). We'd heard that prior to landing, you walked th rough the a ircra ft and handed a hundred doll ar bill to each of your em ployees as "walking arou nd money" whi le in Hou ston . Du ring tha t Houston visit it was Ha nk Slegers ' birthday. and yo u weren 't go ing to let the milestone go unnoti ced. hosting a dinner party for him. Other than your : fami ly and store emp loyees, Shi rlee and I were extreme ly hono red to be the o nly o utsiders invited to atten d. Since those days we've followed your adventures in the media, and always took grea t pride in havin g known you, even th ou gh briefly. . Motor cycling could n't hire a better goodwill ambassad or than you hav e been - and you did it all just becau se you wanted to and, fortunat ely, could afford to do it in a truly first class manner. We've lived in a wonderful era, and you 've certainly enhanced it in many ways for many people throughout the world. God bless you, Malcolm Forbes.
