Rick Kirk (5) leads Scott Stump (69), Franklin Knight (34),and the rest of the Expert U/ L Supersport class into turn one . Pounders (ahem)pounds 'em in Daytona sprints By Brian Catterson DAYTONABEACH, FL, MAR. 2·4 ifteen years is a lon g layoff, but that's how long it had been since 32-year-old Novice Lee Pounders swung a leg over a motorcycle wh en he began road racing last June. Pounders, from Orlando, Florida, was seriou sly injured in a bike/ car collisio n as a teenager, and had not had the urge to rid e again until friends talked him into trying his hand at road racing. That Pounders has what it takes was evide n t at Da ytona International Speedwa y as he rode his Avon-shod TBR Racing Honda CBR600 to two Novice sprint race win s, and a fourth place fini sh as well. Pounders' first appearance at Daytona cam e in Saturday's ' seven- la p Novice Heavyweight Superbike final, where he p itted his 600 against a full field of 750s and came hom e fourth after running up front at the start. That race was won by Brett Metzger of Newiston, Connecticut, who also rode hi s Dunlop-shod Suzuki GSXR750 to the Novice Heavyweight Supersport win. L ater, P ounder s dominated the Novice Middleweight GP race, posting an over lO-second margin of victo ry. He then. backed that up with a hardfought Novice Middleweight Superbike win over Rus sell Thornley on a Yamaha FZR600 and Eric Moucatel on a Suzuki Katana. Another Novice who took home two first -place trophies was James Vick of Joppatowne, Maryland, who rode what appeared to be an evil-handling Moto Guzzi to wins in both the Lightand Heavyweight Supertwins events. Racing veteran and three -time Daytona 200 winner Roger Reiman turned his pole position into a runaway as he rode his Rob ison Harley-Davidson to the Expert Lightweight Supertwins win . Pete Johnson came from behind to finish second on his trick Honda RS750 -p owered H awk , while Eric Phillippe took third on a Ducati 750. F 14 Two-time and ' current AMA 'Pro Twins Mod Prod titleholder Kevin Erion won the Expert Heavyweight Supertwins race on his Two Brothers Racing Honda Hawk, inheriting the win wh en runaway leader Jimmy Adamo overshot the ch icane. Adam o reentered the race, but with just a lap and a half remaining even the hors epower of his Reno Leoni-tuned Ducati 851 would not allow him to regain th e lead. Malcolme Tunstall took third on his Syd's Cycle Ducati when Randy Shemwell's 851 broke. With the opening rounds of th e AMA National Championship Road Race Series (and the Daytona 200) just a week away , a number of top Pros used the available track tim e to dial in their equipment. Of those , Randy Renfrow, Rueben McMurter and David Sadowski all posted win s. Defending AMA Pro Twins GP champ Ren frow rode his Dunlop-shod Com onwealth Honda RC30 to a win in Friday afternoon 's 14-lap Solo GTO Race 1, during which he made a mock pit stop, and was able to regain the lead before the completion of th e lap; McMurter and Sadowski waged a war in So lo GTO Ra ce 2, with Sadowski gaining a slight advantage before retiring to th e pits on lap six. McMurter, riding a Michelin-shod Honda Canada RC30, took the win. Solo GTU action saw Florida's own Joey Col e ride his Yamaha TZ250 to the Race I win over a mostly 600cc field, while Sadowski defeated his Vance & Hines Yamaha teammate Thomas Stevens in Ra ce 2. Both rod e Dunlop-shod FZR600s. Probab ly the best Daytona 200 preview was Sunday morning's Expert Heavyweight Superbike final , in which Sadowski defeated Stevens on their OWOls by .29 of a secon d. Nevertheless, most sto p wa tc he s showed Stevens turning fractionall y quicker laps in the low 1:55-range as he caugh t Sadowski from behind. M cMurter finished third, with Tom Kipp and Joh n Hopperstad fourth and fifth, respectively, on their new OWOls. Renfrow was sixth. Sadowski also defeated McMurter in the Expert Unlimited GP race, with Kipp finish ing third , Hopperstad fourth , and Mark Chin, also on an OW01, fifth. Stevens beat Sadows ki by nearly six seconds to "win" the Expert Middl eweight Supersport final, but both were disqualified for illegal air intake ' modifications . This handed the win to Jon Roberts, with Michael Barnes second, Kipp third, French Canadian J acques Guenete fourth an d John Condron fifth. All except Kipp (Commonwealth Honda CB R600 ) rode . Yamaha FZRs. Yoshimura Suzuki' s Tommy Lynch won the Expert Heavyweight Supersport race handily over Rick Kirk and Britt Turkington, a ll on Suzuki GSXR750s . Muzzy Kawasaki's Doug Chandler had trouble getting traction on his ZX7'and finished sixth. In 250cc action, Chris D'A luisio looked like the man to beat , although the resu lts don 't show it that way. In Saturday' S Lightweight GP ra ce , D'Aluisio, riding his Davhar Racing Yamaha TZ250A, stormed to a huge lead, only to be disqualified fo r starting from the wrong position. This promoted Canadian Andrew Trevitt to the win , as he nipped defending 600cc Supersport champ Scott Zampach at the fin ish line. Doug Brauneck won Sunday 's Exp ert Middleweight GP event on his Hasty Racing Yamaha TZ250A, but D'Aluisio had gotten off to a poor star t and was closing fast on his way to fini shing in the runner-up slot. Canadian Jon Cornwell finished third on his TZ250A with Adamo fourth on his Ducati 851. And finally, in a previ ew of next Sunday's U.S. Twins Sport race for Harl ey-Davidson 883 Sportsters, exhuberant dirt tracker Ran dy Texter took his first road race win over noted vintage racer Pat Moroney and H- D go-fast guy Nige l Gale, who won the first-ever Twins Sport race here last fall: Texter dedicated the win to his father, who is recuperati ng in a Brunswick, Georgia, hospital following an accident on Friday, March 2, in whi ch a log fell off a logging truck in front of his motorcycle. The elder Texter suffered a broken right femur, a cracked pe lvis and a dislocated right shoulder. l:N Florid a's L ee P o u n ders won two classes an d finished fourth in an oiher.
