gentlema n to his similarly dr essed
compan ions who were enjoyi ng a
before dinner cocktail o n one of two
patios flanking a lu xu ry hotel on th e
sho re of Italy 's La ke Co mo.
Having just finished an all-day ride
through th e Alp s, headed to the French
Riviera for the press launch of th e new
four-cylinder BMW KIOO, Phil Schilling, then editor of Cycle magazine,
a repres entative of Autoweek magazine, and I were th e first of our group
to arrive at the hotel. And there we
sat , still wearing our ridin g gear the van carrying o ur lu ggage wouldn 't
arrive for hours, as a dozen or so of
our traveling companio ns rode rather
rapidly up the hot el's dr iveway, one
stopping wit h his bike's front whee l
on th e pat io.
It turned o u t that although we were
welcome to enjoy a refreshing drink
o n that pa tio, coat and tie were de
rigueur for the di ni ng patio on th e
other side of the ho tel. Once to ld of
the dela y of o ur " lugga ge van," the
manager of th e hotel said he would
ask the o the r gu ests if they would
approve of us dining with them , sans
coats and ties.
After circulating amo ng the guests,
the manager returned and said it would
be " no problem. "

Followin g o ur meal , the other guests
- most of whom, it turned out, were
Americans - upper cru st American s,
joined us in co nversa tion. Of course,
they first asked if we kn ew Malcolm
Forb es. Most of us did, havi ng ridden
with him, cruised with him aboard hi s
yach t, been to hi s New Yor k City office
or New J ersey hom e or French chateau,
even flown with him in hi s 727 or o ne
of h is many hot-air balloons. All of
th em kn ew of Ma lcolm, not a o ne had
met him. Duly impressed th at we had ,
the conversatio n(s) turned to mo torcycling. We did th e talking , they did the
listening. I firmly believe at least one '
if not two of those guests are now
converts and are enjoy ing the twowheeled sport.
The one guest's " I trust Malco lm's
wi th them " comment, came to mind
last week when I heard that Malcolm
Stevenson Forbes had passed away.
The sadness I fir st felt o n hearing of
hi s passing remai n s. But it 's now
accompanied with somethi ng else: an
appreciation of the fact that alth ough
he wasn 't physically with us that
evening in Ital y, he was with us. He'll
always be with us. Just as he opened
a dining patio "do or" for a group of
motorcyclists, he'll continue to .o pen
doors for us in th e future.
