Making the nice interesting in th e
early-going was Yosh i mura Su zuki 's
Steve Cr evier, who was using th e
end ura nce. race as superb ike prac tice.
T he Ca na dian Nati on al Cha mp io n
gave Q uarterley so meone to race with
from the start, but he event ually pitted,
leaving Quarterley alon e o ut front.
J o h nso n & Wood 's Lee Shie rts held
down a top-five positi on a t the start,
but an oi l leak o n the Suzuki 1100
nearl y Rut him into the wa ll o n lap
three, and he retired.
Northstar Racing 's J ohn J acob was
also o n the gas ear ly, but a lo w-fuel
warnin g lig h t came on and distracted
him go ing into turn one , and he rode
off into the grass and fell.

Behind Team Eleph a nt came Keyston e Racing 's Kevin Rent zell and Mark
H eiser, who turned 84 laps on th e
George Fins-prepared Suzuki 1100 to
fini sh sixt h. Last year, Fitts fielded
Co loradoans R icky Orlando a nd
Deiter La ne , but Orlando, now in his
mid- 30s, has decided to retire , and
La ne was recuperatin g from i nj uries
sustained in an Arizona cl ub race.
Rentzell was barely back in the
sadd le hi m self, h aving recei ved a
doctor 's approval on the Monday prior
to race day. Rentzell rode for Dutch man Racing last year, until a hor rr endous accide nt a t T all ad ega left him with
a bru ised bra in. Rent zell sa id th at he'd
been having troubl e focusi ng h is eyes
at speed, but that during this race he
again becam e comfortable, wi th no
disor ientation.
Keystone started . the race o n Yo koham a 003 street radials because Kayo
Racing, th e Yokoham a tir e vendor ,
said there weren 't eno ugh slicks wid e
enough to fit the rear ri m to go around

of the fastest laps of th e race in th e
I:58-range, despite still havi ng an 003
front. The team also lost tim e durin g
an early p it stop to rep lace a set of
glazed brake pa ds.
Finishing on the same lap as Keystone were GTU class wi nners Team
T oomer, wi th Floridians Jon Roberts
and J eff Far mer teaming with J acques

H owever, Northstar claimed th at
Dale Quarterley, who last year teamed 'with Mike H arth to win the GTO titl e, team ed with T om Kipp to take th e win.
