With six laps to go lie was back in the lead after the Brad sh aw/Kiedro wski collision , an event that cha nged the entire com plexion of the race. In additio n to moving the top two to th e bottom of th e to p 10, it kn ocked Sta nton to the far back of th e field . " Whe n they fell, I tried to double it and didn 't make it," Stant o n said, " I did something to my left arm." With five laps to go it was Cooper, Jeff Ward, Joh nson, Ma tiasevich, Bayle and Larry Ward. J o hnson moved past Ward and briefly took over the lead befor e handing it back to Cooper. Wh en Cooper bobb led o n a sho rt straigh taway , J eff Ward moved int o . second with two laps to go, Starting the last lap J eff Ward knew wh ere he would have to make his move if he wanted to win and he had two cho ices. "T here were two corners I could do it in ," he said, "I used the right turn before the triples. I sq uared up there and I went on th e o uts ide because I knew the inside line was slow ." . T he fin al order was Ward, thrusting a fist in the air as he flew past the checkered flag, ahea d of Cooper and J o hnson. Bayle moved into fourth wit h three laps to go and Matiasevich wa s dropped to sixth by fifth-place finis her Larry Ward wi th two lap s to . go. " I go t a sideac he in the main," Mati asevich said. "I was trying to go as fast as I could up there and I was in a big dogfight. I'm just glad Wardy won ins tead of anyone else." Bayle said he got sandwiched at the start by Johnson and ano ther rider, and had to back off for the first corne r. " After that I tri ed to ride smooth and not crash," said the 250cc MX World Champion, Bayle. " When you' re a little faster it' s easy to pass here. Matiasevich was alittle bit harder." " I made some mistakes out there, but I'm ge tt in g st ron ger every race, " Johnson said. " It 's early in the series and nob ody is runnin g away wit h it. " On th at coun t, J ohnson's right. The fifth race produced its fourth different winner with nei th er J ohnson nor Coo per having wo n yet. " I broke the top five o n th e star t and I was riding rea l aggressive," Cooper said. "A lo t of tim es I cou ld have fall en down, but I didn't. I had to get my second wind back after I stalled." I25cc Main Suzuki's Denny Stephenson fin ished second in hi s heat after screwing up and getting wh at he called the " leader's blu es." He'd have non e of tha t in the main . Off th e line Stephen son was third and on the third lap was in the lead, never to be headed. " I 'go t a good start and just rode smooth ly," th e Nebraskan said . After win n ing hi s fir st su percross he said that he felt he "should have won a couple of weeks ago, but I had some bad lu ck in H ou ston , I want to tha n k my dad, Don. H e's been my mechanic every year and I feel like we both deserve this one." T he battle for second was between Buehl and J ones with Buehl us ing the inside line in one corner going under Jones who was' high o n the berm . " I go t a good start and 1 passe d Mike," Buehl said. " I just ra n ou t of time. " CN Resul ts 125 HEAT I: I. jere my Buehl (Suz): 2. Jim Cheste r (SUI); g. Mike Roth (Sur); 4.
