I I Fourteen-year-old H on da rider Ryan Huffman just wasn't satisfied with his second .place finish last week atthe Houston, T exas, Amateur Supercross, so he drove to San Diego, California, with win ning in mind. Bobby H u bba rd showed hi s su pe rcross skills by do min ati n g both motos of th e 125cc Novice class and finishing a strong seco nd in the 250cc Novi ce division. GFI Ra cing promoted the even t but was governed and supervised by the Mick ey Thompson Entertainment Group, promoters of the Camel Su pe rcross Series event held th e previous night. GFI ra ce promoter Linda Breeker said "T here were a few riders comp laining about th e tra ck being too easy, but our goal wa s to design a track that was safe a nd fun to ride, and no one complained the y didn't have fun ." Ka wasaki/Race T ech-sp onsored Ulven led th e way in th e first I25cc Intermediate moto. Charlie Love and Sean Pagel followed closel y on th e fir st lap, while cha rging hard from back in th e back wa s Huffman. Huffman wa s flying further th an a nyone off th e jumps and cut hi s wa y through the p ack to th e front runners . Huffman fir st power ed passed J eff Brownlee, th en closed on the Barnett-Pagel battle for second. Huffman backed off a nd watched th e two Suzuki rider s battle it out, hoping they would take each other o ut. As th e final la p ap proached , Huffman becam e impati ent with the du el a nd jumped by Pa gel th en cu t in side Barnett. On the last half of th e last lap Huffman reeledin second p la ce C har lie L o ve, a n d ra il ed arou nd a n o u tside berm to tak e seco nd. Ul ven styled to th e win followed by H uffman , Love a nd Pagel. Ulven and Huffman reach ed the first turn side by side in moto two. Ulven reac hed a double jump first, but Hu ffman had th e faster ou tside lin e a nd flew past in the ai r. T ha t left H uffman o n the o utside fo r the next tu rn, a nd Ulven went 10 the inside a nd executed a bloc k pass. Huffman flogged Ulven on th e first la p before he found a n openi ng a nd sq ui rted by for th e lead. Huffman powered a way from U lven a nd went o n to wi n by five seconds. U lven fini shed second followed by Barnett, while Pagel got a bad start a nd worked up to fourth aft er passi ng Je ff Bro wnl ee o n th e last la p. Kevin Geyer led th e start of the first 250cc Interm ediat e moto a nd co n tro lled most o f th e race until the final laps. Ulven had wor ked ' u p from a 10th p lace start to seco nd in five la ps, and th e remain ing two laps were a tight battle between Geyer a nd Ulven . Geyer blocked Ulven's pass a ttem pts all th e wa y LO th e chec kers a nd beat Ulv en. Jeff Moore and Mic Elsdberry rounded out the top four. In th e second moto Ulven holeshot a nd Geyer started 10th. Ulven styled out front whil e G eyer battled through th e pa ck. It took Ge yer most of th e race to get to fifth and a t that point he encou ntered a fierce battle between J ack Willis and Charlie Flippin. Geyer clo sed , but couldn't mak e a pass. Ulven 's win was undisputed , Br yan Ri chardson held second; Derick Willis decided .the battle for third, Flippin settl ed for fourth a nd Geyer finished fifth. Mor e than 75 125cc No vices were entered in th e event and had to be broken into three div isions. In the first divi sion action, Bobb y Hubbard , sp o n so re d by Saddleback Suzuki, led th e pack into th e fir st \ turn. T im Staufenbeil and Brian T eets ran seco nd and third while Shaun Mcintosh was fourth. Travis Fleming worked traffi c and moved to the front. Fleming used an outside berm to pa ss Mcintosh, whi le Fleming clo sed down o n Steaufenbeil , but . cou ldn 't find a way a round. Hubbard cru ised to victory foll owed by T eets , Steaufenbeil a nd Fleming. Hubbard was th e hol esh orartist agai n, in moto two follow ed by ' Stea u fen beil, Fleming a nd McIntosh, wh ile T eets sta rted 12th. T eets drilled hi s wa y to six th by the fifth lap as Hubbard styled ou t front unch allenged: Fleming closed on Stea fen bei l, but backed o ff in a yello w-flag area wh ere Steaufe n beil refu sh ed to ac knowledge the flag. Mitch ell blitzed by Bagwell on th e fourth lap , but Bagwell repassed h im . On the sixth lap both riders ca me side by side into th e rockers. Bagwell shu t off but Mitch ell didn 't
