By th e ti m e yo u read thi s, th e final public hearing on HR780, th e California Desert Protection Act, will be over . If you were not there at the hearing to o ppose th e bill , you eith er have a ' good reason (wo rk, illness, you live m ore than 300 miles from Beverly H ills) or just a lousy excu se (go ahead, p ick one). If yo u have not joined th e AMA and CO RVA , supported th e Ca liforn ia Desert Coal it ion with a donation, su bscribed to Dirt Alert, and written letters to a ll your elected o fficia ls to oppose H R780 and SIl , yo u have no excuse a t all. The AMA National Championsh ip H are Scrambles Series is slowly becom in g t he Nationa l H are Be H ound Series with races in T exas, Cali fornia an d Idaho. No t that the hare scra m bles ri de rs can' t ride th em , but it's the idea o f desert racing being called hare scram bles. In ta lk ing to Roger Ansel o f the AMA in T exa s, he sa id h e turned down a pplications from very reliab le and woods-oriented p laces just to ha ve races out west so th e West Coa st riders wou ld hav e a chance to ra ce. So the eastern riders spe nd the ir time a nd mo ney to run these races, but, o n the o ther h and, when races come to Kentucky, T ennessee a nd Pennsylvan ia , th e western riders are n ever seen. Nor would th e AMA permit a Na tio na l H are Be Hound to be run a t Blackwa ter. With the new fo rmat, you count yo ur best seven of nine races, so you can' t afford to miss even one race. My point is that you should lea ve hare scramb les in th e woods a n d the mud and run hare and hound ra ces in th e desert.
