I Crumb timed the gate just right in the first 250cc P ro moto and was • able to get th e hol esh ot by two bike ;{ lengths. Pal adin o grabbed th e h ol eshot in th e seco n d 250cc Pro moto follow ed o n the fir st turn by Roth an d Nelson. Nel son was quickly passed by Crumb and th e p ai r diced ba ck an d forth th roughout th e lap. 'Pa ladino relinq ui shed hi s lead to Roth, follow ed closely by Crumb who had passed Nelson for th e fin a l time. Crumb next put th e hea t on Pal adino with th e position p assi n g back and forth between the two riders. Wi th Paladino finall y p assed, Crumb was next after Roth, wh o wa s holding o n tightly to first during th e th ird lap. Nelson caugh t a rut in a sh arp rig hth and tu rn, wen t downand was out fo r th e moto. With Nelson o ut, Clay m oved into th e fourth pl a ce slo t. At the fro nt, Crumb co ntin uous ly ch a llenged Roth and th e top two were running ra gged trying to ou tpace on e another . In th e n ext la p, Crumb went down in a tu rn, but los t orily one position to Pal adino. Paladino got stuc k on a berm, surre nderi n g second place back to Crumb an d giving u p o ne ' m ore place to Clay. In th e next to last lap, Crumb o u tju m pe d Ro th on th e ta bletop but went wide o n th e following tu rn allowing Roth to m a in tai n . th e lead, but Crumb snagged th e lead from Roth on the backside o f the lap to fin ally tak e over first. R o bb ie Ba ke r pulled h im self throu gh th e p ack to manage a fou rt h p lace finish with McGra th rounding o u t th e top five. In additio n to Cru mb 's first p lace overall in the 250cc Pro class, Clay o n a Yama ha took second; Roth, aboard a Ka wasaki p laced th ird ; Honda-mounted Eric McKenna won both motos for the overall. victory in the Vet Pro class. Eric Pucelik snagged th e hol esh ot as the l 25cc Pros fired o ff th e line in th e first mot o. Cha sin g h im were N elson an d Pal adin o. The lead cha n ged hands between Pucel ik a nd Nelson three tim es in th e ne x t 200 yards with Pucelik p ulling it out o ne more tim e in th e swee per. The duo . co ntin u ed to be followed by Pala-, dino an d Crumb. Nelson fin ally nailed Pucelik midair as h e £lew across th e table top. Crumb, who had passed Pal ad in o, took adva ntage o f th e situatio n a n d 'pa ssed Pucelik himself. . Nel son hung o n to th e lead, wi th Crumb righ t on hi s tail. Crumb con tinued to hamm er at Nelson while Pucelik an d Pal adino dueled for th e th ird position. T he pair were s id e- by-s ide over a jump 'w h e n P al adin o tried to tak e him on th e in sid e, th en went ou tsid e a nd down, losin g h is position to Brian Sweaney. Crumb persistently pushed for th e lead, bu t was denied by Nelson as the twosome raced th rough th e turns and jumps of th e fin al laps o f the moto, " Nelson a nd I battled a lmost the whole firs t rnot o ," Crumb told Cycle N ews. " O n th e last la p o n the ba ck section of th e track, Nelson p us he d m e into th e side and I went over th e bars. We wer e so far a h ead of th e rest : th at I wa s able to ge t back on a nd cr uise in for seco n d." Nel son fini sh ed th e lap u nc hallen ged for th e first place, follow ed by Crumb , Sweaney, R oth a n d Paladino. Pal adino antici p at ed th e dro p of th e gate in th e second l25 cc Pro moto perfectly an d was ready to claim th e h ol esh ot. Following him around th e fi r st turn were Pu celik, Nel son, Robbie Baker and Crumb. Crumb passed Bak er midway th rough th e first lap, m oving into fourth, j us t behind Nelson, again . Nel son went down in a turn with Crumb running over h is bike a nd th en cl icking it up to catch the leader s. After th e first l a p , i t wa s P al ad in o , Pu celik , Crum b, Nel son an d Baker pursued by th e rest o f the p ack. Pucel ik laid h is bi ke dow n on a berm, giving up seco n d to Crumb and exitin g th e ra ce. Crumb closed th e ga p leading to Pa la d in o to four bi ke len gths and was riding hard. Nelson kept h is pace to mainta in thi rd, followed by Bak er an d Sweaney. As Pal a dino and Cr u mb pa ssed the w hite £la g , the race intensi fie d . Cru mb fl a t-tra cked the sweeper closi ng th e gap between th e duo. T he pair raced the final lap with Crumb trying to get p as t on th e ins ide of each turn an d Paladin o h olding him off. Pal ad ino won th e race by just a h air; Crumb was forced to settl e for seco nd.
