Jeff Villarreal (55) and Eric Beinbesser filled the top three overall positions after they battled in the 250cc Beginner class. Ron Turner won the Vet Pro class wi th Mike Preston second a nd Val T ami etti th ird . Intermediate class action was hotly co ntested with Dana Wiggins a nd h is Yamaha foi li ng T eam Green in the l 25cc class . Wiggin s en ded up in a 1-3 tie for first wi th Team Green 's J oel Albrech t, but Wiggins took the tie-break er. T ommy Clowers, Steven Kot ajarvi a nd Danny Ulve n filled ou t the to p five o n Kawasakis. Albrecht was more success fu l in the 250cc Interm ediat e clas s where he took double rnoto wins. H e sq uea ked pas t And y Grider a nd Bill Sauro on th e last lap to win th e first rnoto, the n led all but the last la p of rnoto two. A brief fall handed th e lead to Larry Lawrence. Albrecht battl ed back into th e lead , the n Law rence repassed but went off the trac k in the next turn . And y Grider ended up seco nd overall ahea d of La wrence, Kevin Geyer a nd Ulven. Chris top her Co ru m did a masterfu l job of getting decent starts a nd th en passing to the front of th e Vet N ovi ce pack rid i ng a H o n da CRI25 R against a' field primaril y m ounted o n la rger ma chines. Ronal d Wat ts took second overa ll with a 3-2 score that brok e th e tie with Ronny J ones' 2-3. Fra nk Lavres was fourt h and Greg Paga n fift h. This was a h uge class with trophies going to John Su lliva n, Da ve Graham , Robert Moo re a nd Lo uis Laney as well as the top five. Actio n in th e 250cc Begin ner class was fairl y wi ld. Grant Steele sto le th e show in th e firs t mota , th ough , with hi s cha rge from th e back of the pack into th e top three , but he bailed in th e second mot o. Eric Beinbesser walked a way wi th the second mot a , bu t was stuck in th e pack in th e first moto, unabl e to do m uch passin g. T he best rac ing in th e class was a double-m oto battl e between Greg Giddings, Kirk Wasson a nd Dav id Sch mi dt. Severa l European ri ders competed under assumed na mes to avo id probl em s with their home country federations. T he Suzuki and Yamaha factory teams wer e a bsent, preferring to practice for the Anaheim supercross. Kiedro wski ho leshot the firsl250cc Pro moto with Ward and Erik Kehoe in tow. Wa rd followed Kiedr owski for just over a lap before taking first, a nd that was the only cha nge in the top fo ur for the first four la ps. Back in th e pa ck a Bayle/Johnson/ Stanto n freight trai n was on the move behi nd speedy m ystery Europea n rider Don Pa tton. Lap five saw Ba yle and Joh nson displace Pa tton and bump O 'Mara back two spots as well . Ward slow ed a nd let Kiedrow ski by, seemingly content to wa tch fro m second. Both Bayle and J ohnso n knocked Keh oe back on th e next lap. Bayle reeled in Ward, a nd their battl e carried them both past Kiedro wski. Jo hnson sq ueezed by too, but Kiedrowski tried to repass J ohnson on th e last lap. The move took both riders o u t and Ba yle won handily with Ward a safe second over O'Mara. Sta nton ended up fourth followed by Patt on , J ohn son , Kehoe , Ki edrow ski , Yann Guedard and Rich T aylor. Ward, O 'Mara and Bayle led the seco nd moto start with Hughes in fourth. J ohnson was pushed wid e in the f.irst turn and spe nt his firs! la p o u tside the top 10. J ohnson first passed Stanton and they both moved up on Kiedrowski. All three riders bumped O 'Mara and Hughes back. Ba yle and Ward were safe out in front, but the Honda trio cou ld hav e fit under a blanket with Johnson and Sta nton ind ulging in a close, p h ysica l ba tt le. Kied ro wski held ont o thi rdat th efin ish with Johnson fourth and Stanton fifth. H ugh es, O 'Mara , Keh oe, Guedard and ATK's Greg Ziuerkopf rounded ou t the top 10. Kiedrowski was more successfu l in the 125cc Pro class wh ere he wo n both motos. Kehoe gra bbed the first start with Kyle Lewis in second. Kiedrowski moved up quickly fro m a sixth-pla ce sta rt, whi le Lewi s p ressured Keh oe. T ha t p ress ure ended when Lewis jammed his bike betw een the rea r whee l and fender of Keh oe's machine. Kiedrowski a nd Hugh es passe d the m bo th . Keh oe was away in third with Lewis fourth , but Lewi s soo n pass ed for thi rd a nd th e top three was set. Hughes kept pace with Kiedrowski, thoug h at a safe distance, a nd both riders pulled steadi ly away from Lew is unt il the fin ish. Keh oe DNF wit h a rear fla t a nd Bri a n Calho un mo ved into fourth with Ryan Ca rlis le fifth. In moto two th e pa ck spread qu ickly, but Heit moved up a nd displaced Greg Atkin son for second. Curtis and Hei t the n close ly raced for th e mo to a nd overa ll win, but H eir's th ro ttle cable broke with less than a lap to go in th e race .
