But Bayle also enco un tered mech an ical problems when a rock ben t his rea r bra ke disc. La Rocco pressured Ma tiasevich for severa l laps, but the Kawasaki rider stay ed ahea d to th e finish . " I just tried to ride as relax ed as possibl e," said Mat iasevich. " I fel t rea lly smooth." Mati asevich led Bayle a t the start of the first 125cc Pro class mo to a nd moved out to a co m mandi ng lead when Bayle fell on lap three of th e 15-l ap moto. After remountin g , Bayle spe nt a lap battling by Donny Schmit. Bayle th en quickl y mov ed 'in -behind Matiasevich and took th e l ead after enco u ntering a few laps of stu bborn resistance. n Bayle cruised to th e win as Matiasev ich dropped bac k w ith ar m 'p u mp. Schmit wa s a di stant th ird, and after a race-long battle Kaw asaki 's Jeff Emig got by Erik Kehoe to 'fin ish fou rth. In another race-long enco u nter, Ty Davis fough t b y J immy Button for sixth. Matiasevich ran off with th e lead aga in in th e second mo ta . Bayle started aro und seventh and this time it too k him a few laps to ge t a round Button and Davi s. T he n he enco untered Suzu ki's Den ny Step henson wh o held him off for ano the r two laps. By th e time Bayle wor ked hi s way to second, Matiasevich had a 12second lead. Bayle cha rged and was closing a t least two seconds per lap , but time ran o ut and Matiasevich took th e win with a few seconds to . spare. Stephe nson maintained thi rd a nd had Da vis o n hi s tail at the fini sh. Button was fifth ahead of a close battle between Sch mit, Emig a nd Keh oe. Only four riders ent ered the 500cc Pro class a nd Gordon Ward easi ly took th e wi n after leading every la p of bo th mo tos. Will y Musgrave was last at the sta rt of the second mota ; but worked his way into second just pas t th e halfway point to wrap u p second overall. Tim Nash scored a pair of thirds and David Bagwell rounded ou t the class. Ma rk Du val ran off with th e first 25-29 Intermediate class mot a . Steve Pia ttoni moved by Bill Fay early in th e race and held second until Greg H erbold ch arged up and took th e runner-up positi on lat e in th e race. Tom Engel fought off th e a tta cks of J erry Jackson to claim fourth. Fa y fell back to ninth at th e finish. Piattoni got the holeshot in ro und two a nd opened up a co mforta ble lead on his wa y to the win. Duv al .fell ba ck to fifth on th e first lap, then had to pass David Lynch, J ackson , a nd Fay o n his way to a second-place finish and th e overa ll victory. L ynch a nd Fa y moved by Jackson before th e fin ish , while Herbold fell on th e second lap and worked h is way bac k to sixth at th e end. Duv al didn 't do so well in th e 500cc Intermediate class th ough, as he fin ish ed at th e tail end of th e fourrider field. After getting bea t by Kevin Fringer in the firs t mot a , Andy Grider turned th e tables in mota two a nd clinched th e overa ll wi n. Darren Lindh was th ird overa ll wi th a pair of thirds. Brian Davis held off Ryan Pauls and David Casada for two laps of th e first five-lap l25c c Novice Division One cla ss mota. Davis fell back and alth ough Casada staye d close to Darren Lindh (336) couldn't hold off Kevin Fringer in the 500cc Intermediate class. Fringer got by for second overall behind Andy Grider. Pauls until the end he co uldn 't ge t by. Travis Flem ing was third over Ryan J ohnson and Bobby Hubbard. The second mot a was ex tended to seven laps a nd Pauls took th e early lead. By th e time Casa da had worked by Flem ing for second Pauls was go ne with hi s second consecu tive l 25cc Nov ice ' cl ass o vera ll wi n. Flemi ng hounded Casada on the fin al la p but co uld n 't get by, while .Jo hnso n battled past Davis o nly to · fall back on the las t lap. Dav is was fourth just ahea d of Brian T eets. Br yan Curtis wa s o ne of two do uble' class wi nne rs. In the first division of th e 25-29 No vice class, Curtis led every lap in both motos o n h is way to th e overall win. H e also led the en tire first 250cc Novi ce Division One class mot a , but was fin all y sto pped in the second ro und by Danny Seyler. A third pl ace fin ish in th e firs t mota left Seyler seco nd overa ll. . Scott Churchill was the other rider to win two classes, a nd hi s dom inatio n started wit h a pa ir of firsts in the 500cc Beginner class . Churchill cont inued to ro ll wh en he passed Dav e H olland o n th e second la p of th e first 25-29 Beginner class mota a nd went o n to wi n.
