Two other mini riders recently lost their support rides for similar behavior, and it's a problem Antunez feels stems with th e parents, not the young riders. "You get some dads who see something happening, so they automatically think tha t's th e way it is," explains Antunez. "They don 't take th e tim e to ask th eir kid what happened. They should take control and find out why somethin~ happened, tell their kid to talk with th e other rider(s) and if tha t doesn't work, go talk with the offi cials. You shouldn't try to start a big fight. It happens sometimes but should be avo ided ." When he left the 80s behind there was no problem adapting to th e 125, . yet Antunez started off his professional career slowly; entering local events and working up to the Grand Na tional Championships in Ponca City. In between he raced the 125cc class at the Los Angeles Supercross and finished lIth, then after Ponca " City he rode the last few 125cc Nationals. That's where he learned the dif-' ference between amateur and professional racing. "You have to want it a lot more," · says Antunez. "At the Ama teur J Nationals you only have a handful • of guys wh o are really fast , but at 't'the Na tio nals you loo k down the gate 1 a nd there are 20 or more guys that go good." Antunez vividly remembers sitting behind the gate at hi s fir st National in Washougal, Washington. "I wanted to beat them really bad," I he recalls. " I was a little too anxious, though. I got a good start, but backed out a little too early since I didn't know what to expect and didn 't want · to overshoot the first turn. All these guys went by me , holding it on longer. I got knocked down in the second corner. It sure taught me a lot; you can't back off or give an inch. . Although Antunez tries to win every race he enters , he ap proached those last few 125cc Nationals in 1989 primarily as an opportunity to gain experience. There wasn't any pressure from Suzuki to win. In fact, after his first race at Washougal he signed hi s current one-year contract with Suzuki. "Pat (Alexander , Suzuki 's team manager) said to go out and try my best and try to gain as much expe rien ce as possible," says Antunez. Although he gained knowledge for his assault on th e I 25cc .Na tionals, Antunez only has one supercross race under his bel t. That won't be any disadvantage in his quest for the l25 cc Western Regional Supercross crown, Antunez says. "T he only thing I can do is ride a lot on Suzuki 's supercross track," Antunez says. "It's got everyth ing I need, and I really like riding su per cross . It's fun and takes a lot of skill to get over the whoops and double jumps. " But while practicing for the supercross races Antunez recen tl y tore ligaments in his foot. Despite th e injury, Antunez feels he 's ready for the January 27 Camel Supercross Series opener in Anaheim, California, but admitted, "I won 't know until I get on the trac k." His goals are to win every thing he can, stay consistent, p ull off some overall victories and win the 125cc Western R egio n al Supercross or 125cc N a tio n al Championship. Only a few former minicycle stars have gone on to win Na tional titles, and Antunez would like to add his name to th e list. • I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I
