We're wri ting in rep ly to the letter in your January 10 issue regarding our recent KTM "Happy Holidays" advertisement. We wish to apologize for any misunderstanding the ad might have caused, and we would li ke to make th e fo llowing clarifications: I.The ad was a paid advertisement no t to promote KTM motorcycles, but to extend holiday greetings and our appreciation to your readers. ~ . The ad did not portray a rider harming a cactus, merely riding close by a cactus. It was designed to evoke a winter feeli ng, and to show that rider and wi lderness ca n successfully coexist in harmo ny. We are glad the realism was appreciated. As a matter of fact, the p ho tograp h was shot entirely inside a studio. What looks li ke snow is actually baking powder . The cactus is in a pot (concealed), was grown commercially, and is act ually still alive and thriving. The tire tracks were made with a tire .alone, no rim, no bik e, no engine. 3. T he people at KTM of America, Inc. and Dahm & Associa tes Advertising Agency are riders a nd environmentalists both. We want to keep off-road riding a safe and respected activi ty, and wish to preserve and protect the wilderness. We believe t hese desires are not m utual ly exclusive. Agai n, we apologize to any readers who misunderstood or were offended in any way by our ad, and again we extend its original message of heartfelt appreciation a nd season's greetings to all. DAVID J. DAHM President Dahm & Associa tes, In c. T orrance, CA Focus on the real nemesis In response to Mr. Selby's letter in your January 10 issu e regarding our " Happy Holidays" advertisment, we regret any misunderstandi ng this ad might have caused, and therefore would like to point out the following facts: While it is tru e that we, th e "professionals," in the sport have a responsibility to present o ur products in an environmenta lly sensitive manner, we also ' feel it is our obligation to depict the typical offroad motorcycling experience in some real sense as well. For thousa nds of respo nsibl e off-road enthusiasts this experience includes sand, and snow, and rocks, and trees, and mountains, and deserts, and, yes, . even cactus. The winter scene of a tire track in the snow, set.next to a cactus is valid for two reasons. One, it demonstrates that off-road recreation activities and .protection of the environment are n o t mutually exclusive ideas (remember the image was not one of a tire track p lowing through the middle of a cactus, but rather passing by without harm to th e plant itself) . We believe that off-road recreation activities can coexist in harmony wi th the environment. Second, an d what's really at issue here, is that we believe we have a right to be there. We at KTM feel it is time for everyone in the off-road co mm un ity to focus their attention on the rear .nemesis of our sport, env ironmental special interest groups, ra ther than lashing out at each other. After all, wou ld it be possible to construct any advertisement for an off-road prod uct, no ma tter ho w a nt iseptic or ster ile th e setting it was shown in, witho ut offending the ha rdcore environmentalists? We look forward to seeing all of you at the H R780 hearing in Los Angeles o n February 10. . SCOT HA R DEN Media Rela tions Mgr. KTM America, Inc. EI Cajon, CA District 37's Dana Bell says a sit e for th e February 10 HR780 hearing has not been determined, but wi ll be shortly . " You 'll be amo ng th e firs t to know, " said Bell. Of course, we'll relay th e information as soon as we receive it . . . Editor. . Typo blues This is to bring to your attention a n error made in you r 1990 Buyer's Guide (January 3 issue). Editor. l More than contracted for I have waited thre e weeks to write this letter hoping tha t with tim e I wou ld be able to approach it in a more rational manner and lea ve the vindictiveness and hurt out of iV II had a serious problem with one Of your advert isers thi s past month, namely Russ Darnell. My son attended o ne of his three-day motocross schools in November and came home all fired up a nd full of stories about his new hero , Russ . A young man of 15 always needs someone to loo k up to in accomplishing grea t tasks or at least striving toward them. Included in the litera ture sent home at the end of th e course were severa l religious tracts which I politely read and discarded since they were not my beliefs. t In the early part of December a package arrived addressed to my sort, Jared. As he opened it he was hopi ng for a video of Ru ss Darnell's rac ing career as was discussed d uring the co urse, but what he got was a video attacking our religious beliefs a nd mocking everything my son had been taught from birth. Need less to say, I was shocked. Such a low class thing I have never encountered before in my whole life. Perhaps R uss has met other people o f the "Mormon" fait h that he did n 't like or agree with, but to attack the beliefs and morals of a 15-year-old boy who worships hi m seemed too bizarre to comprehend Religious fervor is a good thing when channe led in co nstructive ways and I myself spent two an d a half years abroad as a missionary a nd m inister, bu t motocross is what I paid for a nd Russ Darn ell should adult enough to be ab le to separate his " work" from h is desi re to save us "Godless hea thens." I wish R uss and his wife well in their religious beliefs but please allow me the same co urtesy and freedom to believe as I wis h and do n't ever contact anyone in my family again , ever! Let those who wo uld avail themselves of th e Russ Darnell Motocross School be aware tha t you might get more than you contracted for. b e J ON J ACO BSMEYER West H ill s, CA Dust off your twin This is an informal notice to the fact that the Yamaha XS650 is now legal for WERA's Clubman class. This is a provisional acceptance for 1990 and does not appear in the new rule book. I wou ld li ke to thank WE RA for granting my request for this ru le change. Since th e XS650 is also legal for Vintage IV, those of us lacking bo th in racing funds and good sense now have two good classes to race this turkey in . . I expect to see a bunch of these bi kes on the grid at Summit Point this spring. Chuck thos e SR500s an d Ascots a nd race a bike that wi ll rea lly challenge your racing ski lls.
