Abruptly, the Middle Willows end and the Coyote Canyon jeep trail passes a few palm trees as the canyon spreads out again. Then, in another 1.35 miles it passes into a narrow gorge by an old gate, denoting the Riverside County line and old Park boundary. • ! In .a half-mile, the gorge has opened up and the White Child Monument stands on the west side of the trail. The monument commemorates what was thought to be the birth of the first non-Indian child in Alta, California. The event took p lace on Christmas Eve, 1775, as Anza led the first Sonoran colonists through the canyon. Later, it was found other births preda ted this one, but the monument is still at Upper Willows. Above the White Child Monument, corrals will be round from when this was private land. When I was first traveling this area, a longgone Model A truck stood here, complete with a worm-drive rear end and water tank mounted on its flatbed. In less than a mile, the jeep trail has passed through the Upper Wi llows area and into Fig Tree Valley. This is another section or the canyon where.a side road has been ma de into the ma in trail, and the traveler soon finds himself putting up to Bai ley's Cabin. Bailey's Cabin is an , old desert ranch setup. The actua l cabin is ' constructed of stone and cement, furnished with old steel spring beds, a chair and stove. Out back are the remains or a well , water tank and corrals. Across the road from the cabi n is the collapsed remains of a wooden shed. L a st time 'I was thro ugh, it sti ll stood. Inside the ' cabin a visitor log will be fo und, to add your passage to. . In another 3.3 miles, the Coyote Canyon jeep trail reaches the Tule Canyon junction in an area known as Turkey Track, because the three canyons that come together to form upper 'Coyo te resemble a turkey track. A turn to the left fork leads ' to the base or the Anza Ridge tru ck trail and water tank after 0.6 mile. . I don't think they have maintained this truck tra il in at least 20' years. Back then, I had even come down and gone up the grade in a passenger car, but these day s it is strictly 4WD ormotorcycle. It is one rough, rocky and eroded trail. ~ From the base of the grade at Turkey Track, it is 2.95 miles up to the new Park gate and boundary. Then another 10.15 miles into the , town or Anza, via ,Terwilliger Road and State H ighway 371. And one fina l word of caution is due here. Just outside the Par k gate is the first private ranch and a couple of big . dogs that love to chase motorcycles. Be ready for a brisk ride past the ranch. The State Park Visitor Center. vat Borrego Springs, is a good placeto start your Coyote Canyon ride. Here, the Anza-Borrego Desert· Natural History Association sells a topo map pack, covering Coyote Canyon, for a mere $1.50 including tax (Item #10). From the Visitor Center, it is a ride or 7.6 miles to start up Coyo te Canyon, via Palm Canyon Drive and , Di Giorgio Road. From park boun- . dary to park boundary, is a trip of 22.85 miles, not counting side trips. As this ride is in . Anza -Borrego , Desert State Park, a few rules apply. Licensed riders and street lega l , machines only. Ride on established routes only, and observe a 25 mph speed limit. All plant and animal life is protected, no wood gathering or fires, although primitive camping is allowed. • MfA •• a 200 BY Ara 90 49th Dayton h 11 ' 19 Marc sunday, l I pro Kickoff came. al Stadium ·1990 MuniclP March 10, saturday, . -~~US eorne nde , .
