Springsteen was high point ma n on his R ick Kessler / Be ll / Castrol- sponsored H o nda, earning 13 out of ' a possible 15 points. Spri~~steen then came from the pol e posr non to lead all eight laps of the eight-man main event. Tim Mert en s' first two races produced third place finishes but he came back with three straight wins to gain the number three starting position for the main. Ed Morris, the only rider who has competed in the series every year since it started in 1975, had a very good night going, including the other win over Springsteen, until the last heat whe n he no-pointed, dropping him in to a tie with yo ung Mark Wyskiel and many-time series champ Garth Brow. Morris got the last front row position by winning their headto-head competition during the night. The " Draggin Slayer" had a few teething problems, but still ,put on a good snow-throwing show. The main event was red- flagged when Mertens wasted his hardearned front row start by leavi ng early, which resulted in his being sent to the penalty line. Springsteen got the holeshot on the restart with Bryan Villella right behind. Lap two saw Morris push his Cabaret nightclub/ House of Car Stereo-backed Honda into secon d. Springsteen held a solid lead at the halfway point with Morris, Villella and Mertens in a tight ' race fo r second. Wyskie l , Pegram, Hebb and Brow battled over fifth.
