GFI Winter MX Series North: Round 1 Vohland brothers shine b~ightly at 'S andhill Ranch By Allan Shehan BRENTWOOD, CA, JAN. 7 Brothers Tallon and T yson Vohland dominated all three Pro classes at Sandhill Ranch for the opening round of the G FI Winter MX Series North; today. Their wins did not go uncontested, however, as they faced sti ff com- I petition fro m some of northern Cal ifornia's best riders. Sand hill Ran ch owner. T om Anderson pulled o ut all the stops to provide every rid er with two superbly prepared tracks so tha t all th e riders go t eno ugh raci ng tim e. Both tra cks were well -watered throughout th e week prior to th e event, so dust was not a factor. Tyson Vohla nd, wh o just recentl y recover ed from sho u lder surgery, passe d Eric Pu celik a fter he took th eholesh ot in th e first I25cC" Pro moto and stretc hed his lead to almost 10 seconds by mote 's end. Kawasaki mount ed R ay , Crumb who had injured his shou lder in a midweek practi ce crash moved u p to challenge T yson, however, he crashed in a tigh t righ t-hand corner and remounted in last. Crumb remounted to take seco nd place by mote's end. Tyson announced that he had just inked a deal with Carpi Motors out of Ita ly to ,ride the 1990 125cc MX World Championships. Tyson will be mou nt ed on a factory Suzuki and wi ll be living in Reggion mill ia , Ital y. Tyson rode his own Suzuki RMl25 today at Sandhill Ra nch and commented that his still recovering shoulder felt a little sore but his smooth ridi ng style showed no signs of discomfort. Brother Tallon had his capable hands full as he decided to ride both th e 250 and 500cc Pro classes. The Kawasak ilYoko/Race Tech-sponsor ed rid er was inside a green wave of Kawasakis for th e start of the first 250cc Pro moto , whi ch included Ray Crumb and Larry Co leman. Coleman had just returned to racing and was mounted on his 1988 Kawasaki, but showed that he hid not lost any of his speed. Vohland, Crumb and Coleman pu lled away from the res t of th e pa ck in an exciting display of racing with all three rid ers taking th eir turn at th e lead in th e opening ' stages of th e first , moto. Tallon seemed to be holding back and was studying th e lines of the other two rid ers, and on the fifth lap he passed both Crumb an d Coleman to tak e th e lead . Crumb would hav e non e of T all on pullin g away from him a nd .stuck to ,Tallon 's rear fend er for a few laps. Tallon eventua lly go t a little breathing room , bu t Crum b stayed close. At th e end of the rno to it was T all on Vohland first , Ra y Cru mb seco nd and Larr y Co leman th ird. . At the drop of the gate in the first 500cc m ot o , ,T all on sho wed hi s Kawa saki had a serio us horsepower ' adva nt age, as he rocketed into the lead and was never challenged. T allon was fo llowed by Rich Mythen and Allen Berl utti , th e two riders swapped positions severa l times in th e initial stages, with . Myth en in second and Earl Lapointe taking third from Berlutti, The second go- a ro u nd for th e 125cc Pros looked like a ' re-run of th e firs t moto, wi th Eric Puce1ik getting th e ho lesho t a n d Tyson Vohland following. Tyson worked his way around Pucelik by th e second lap and open ed a subs tantial lead. The battle for second pl ace fea tured Ra y Crumb and Suz uki-mounted Scott Stuffs; .Cr urnb e ve n tu a lly worked hi s way pa st Stuffs o n lap six wh en Crumb ou tbra ked Stuffs entering a tight rig ht-ha nd corner. The finishing order was set, wi th Tyson Vohland fir st, Cru mb second and Stuffs third. The fina l 250cc Pro rno to provided spectators with the mos t exci ting racing of the da y. A first turn cra sh kn ocked down both Tallon Voh land and Crumb a nd th ey both remounted at th e back of th e pack. T his misha p allowed Co leman to jump into th e lead with both Vohland and Crumb rid ing all out through the pa ck. Crumb crashed 'o u t on lap three, resu lting in the banging of his recently hea led jaw. The pain was too much for him to co nti n ue . . Tallon maintained his charge from th e back of the pa ck a nd by lap six, pa ssed Mike Mennig for second. On th e last lap T all on managed to sneak pa st Col eman for fir st, and in th e next corner Col eman repassed Tallon. But a t the last corner, Tallon got by Coleman to win th e moto and th e overall with Col eman seco nd and Mennig th ird. The second 500cc P ro moto started like the firs t" one, wi th Tallon Vohland in first, but Mythen would have none of that and passed Tallon to take the lead. Tallon stalked Mythen for twoIaps, passing him down a fast straigh taway. At the end of the moto it was Tallon Vohland first, My the n second and Ea rl Lapo in te third. In the Vet Pro class, Kawasakimounted David Wood and Hondamounted Lynn Berlutti traded mo to wins, with Berl utti win ning the final moto and clinching the overall.
