As the riders headed in to the first left turn o n th e to ·mile loop Suzuki rid er R us s Norma n m o tor ed a head o f Kawasaki-mo unted J ell Odom. Darren Wi lliams and Wayne Keezer pursued Nor man a nd Odom. At th e chec kpoin t a t the finish 0 1 lap o ne, O do m had a 15-seco nd lead o ver No rman and Will iams. Recoverin g fro m the early ordea l, Dahners edged around two-th irds 0 1 the ex per t riders during the first 27 minu tes. At the lin ish of lap fo ur , O dom ha d a mi n ut e lead over second p'lace Da hners, who stopped lor ga s. Mean whil e, Williams, Keezer a nd Norma n cha rge d th rough the pits.
