OH, DEC. 8-10 Auburn H ills, Michigan's Keith Bowen was one of the big winners during th e first three rounds of the Coors Extra Gold Indoor Motocro ss Championship at the O hio Fairgrounds Coliseum. The Suzuki-mou n tedTuf Racingb ~ck rid e~ , Bowen, score d two ~l VIC tones In the 250cc Pro class and one in th e l25cc class, while an other Suzuki rider J eremy Buehl , from London, Ohio, captured two Pro wins in th e l25cc class and a second pl ace in th e 250cc div ision. The series kicked off Friday night, as MotoW orid host Larry Maiers a n nou nce d for th e n ear capaci ty cro wd. Suzuki rider Steve Childress took adv antage o f mi st akes made b y Bow en to win th e first 125cc Pro qualifi er o n Frida y ni ght, whil e Bueh l easily led from sta rt to fin ish in th e second qualifier. . The I25cc Pro main event featured an o utsta nd ing ride by Buehl as he took the lead from T exan Ro y Sh ell enberger through th e first whoop sectio n, while Florida 's Mike Brown held third. Kawasaki rider Jay Mann led a group of rid ers, which in cluded Bowen . that were all trying to move u p on the lead ers. Brown pa ssed Shelle n berg er an d tried to ca tch Buehl , as Bowen started to cha rge. The Tuf Racing-sponsored rid er th en mad e a mistak e by cras hing a nd end ing h is cha nce for th e win. Mann began pressurin g Shellenberg er and event ua lly moved into third. With four laps to go , Brown had narrowed th e gap, but Buehl cranked it up quickly, regaining hi s safe sixsecond lead. Bueh l was followed by Brown, Ma n n , Jason Gray a n d Shell enberger. . After a disappointing finish in th e l25cc race, Bowen was more determined th an ever to be first to th e chec kered flag in the 250cc Pro race . David Hand and J ames Eic kel mad e up for th eir problem s in th e 125cc class, as th ey mad e th e 250cc fin al along with Kizzar, Sh el len- berger, Mann and Chuck Reed. Wh en th e gat e dropped for th e 250cc Pro main, Hand won th e drag race to the fir st turn , but was pursued by Bowen , Mann a nd Eickel. Bueh l was a close fifth. On th e third lap. Bow en passed H and and· th e Suzuki . rider easi ly o pe ned up a secure lead. On th e same lap, Buehl jumped the tri pl es o n th e front wh oop sectio n to pass Eickel a nd began to challenge Mann in third. Buehl co nt in ued to charge a nd he quickl y moved past Mann an d set h is sig hts on ' Hand. H and made a mi stak e a ll o win g Buehl to gain ground and Buehl aga in tri pl ed th e wh oops to mak e the pass. Mann th en took adva ntage of a no ther Hand erro r to tak e third . Buehl tried to catch Bow en , but Bowen rod e just . ha rd enough to maintain hi s lead . Buehl followed u p his 125cc Pro victory wi th a second in th e 250cc class, and Mann took third. Han d finis hed fourth over Eickel. On Saturday ni gh t, the first l25cc Pro quali fiers saw Brown lead fro m start to fin ish , whil e Mich igan 's John Grewe too k second . J im Ch ester pulled th e holesh ot in th e seco nd qua lifier but Suzu kibacked Todd DeH oop passed h im in th e wh oops o n th e first lap and went o n to tak e the win. Buehl scor ed the third qualifi er win over David Becking ton. . In the fin al 125cc Pro q ua li fer , Bowen go t a bad jump off th e gate th en slid o ut and dropped to eig h th . Mark Mu sselman and J oe Maurer were ou t in front , as Bowen began to cha rge up th rough th e pack. Bowen even tually motored to th e front of the heap, passed Mu sselm an a nd ca p tured th e win. The 125cc Pro main saw Buehl waste littl e tim e mov ing into the lead, followed by DeHoop and Brown. Bowen got his best start of th e weekend behind Brown but fell trying to pass him. Bowen dropped to th e back of th e field. Then Brown crashed turning third o ver to Gra y with Herman in fourth. As Buehl a nd DeHoop styled out in front, Bowen moved up through th e field to finish fifth. The lineup for th e 250cc main incl ude d Bow en , Bu ehl , Brown, Herman a nd Gray. Rodney Phillips also mad e th e main and was joined by conso la tion winners Kenny Kizzar, Mann, Derrick Roe, J ohn Lewi s a nd Hand. The last rider to mak e it to th e final was Childress. As th e ga te dropped for th e 250cc Pro m ain, Kizzar had the lead , followed by Hand, Phillips a nd Buehl. Back in sevent h , but a lready on th e move, was Bowen . Buehl tried to jump the triples arid push Phillips wid e in th e following turn. Buehl hit Phillips, sendi ng both rid ers to th e ground. Kizzar was flying out front h o p in g to p ut enoug h distance between himself a nd Bowen , who had moved into fifth. Two turns lat er, Bowen was in th ird. Soon aft er he was in seco nd . and chasing down Kizzar. But th e leader was riding a flawl ess race a nd held on for a hard-fought win over Bo wen . Buehl had moved into fourth, and on th e last lap he again tried to jump past H and in th e triples. Beuhl hit Hand a nd both rid ers went down . hard , one turn from th e finish line. Roe put in a hard rid e, a nd whe n Buehl a nd H and cras hed, Roe moved in to third. Mann fini sh ed fourth followed by Phillips. . Bowen a nd Eickel fini sh ed th e weekend off o n Sunday with a bang, as th ey battled to place fir st and second in both th e 125 and 250cc Pro main even ts. . Buehl topped the first 125cc Pro qualifier o ver Bowen and Kizzar. In the second qua lifi er, Del-loop dom inated the race over Mus selman. Roe topped the third qualifi er. Both Buehl a nd DeHoop cra shed in th e first turn at the start of the last l25cc main even t of the weekend. Mu sselman a nd hi s KTM took over th e lead but was pressured by Eickel, Bowen, Roe a nd Childress. Eickel even tua lly passed Mu sselma n, but Bowen was soon houndin g the new lead er for the top spo t. Bowen finall y found hi s op po rt unity to tak e over first. At the fini sh , Eickel held second with Childress third, Roe fo urth and Mu sselm an fifth . The first 250cc qualifer saw Kizzar a nd Mann tak e a hard tumble right a t the start, triggerin g a red flag for a restart. A batter ed a nd bruised Kizzar grabbed the hol esh ot o n the restart o ver Mann , H erman a nd Bowen. H owev er . Ki zzar ba il ed agai n di rectly in front of Mann . who ra n into the downed rid er. Kizzar ca lled it a weekend. Bo wen won th e qu al ifier over Herm an , Childress a nd Eickel. Buehl cap tured th e second qualifier win after DeHoop cras hed, whil e Beckin gt on a n d Mann fini shed second and third. Maurer topped th e last q ualifier, whil e DeH oop aced the conso la tio n. The 250cc final was a rep eat of the l25cc fin al, as DeH oop and Buehl wen t down early wi th Eickel taking the lead . As before, Bowen passed Buehl for th e win .
