At the start of the Los Alto s M.C.-hosted event, Paul Funaro jumped into the early lead with Phil Dougla s and Nayl or in cl ose pursuit. Nay lor moved into th e lead by th e seco nd turn. wtrile McKenzie lu cked in behind th e new lead er. But McKen zie went down when he go t crossed up in a rut while entering a turn. The Suzuki rider quickl y remounted a nd aga in charged a fter th e ATK pilot. Co m pleting the first eigh t-m ile lap. Na ylor appeared with McKenzie breathing down hi s neck. Yamah a rid er Funaro was in a close th ird. wh ile mot ocr osser Todd Hicks was in fou rt h on a Suzuki RM 125. Head ing into the pit area , McKenzie look o ver the lead. U nfortuna tely for McKenzie. it o nly lasted until the fourth lap when he pitted with Nay lor fiyin g back mto the lead. From that poi nt on , it was Na ylor 's race as he cru ised hom e in first place with McKenzie settling lor second and with the cha m p io nshi p in be-rd. Third went to Funaro. Ken Kramasz and Eric Sh arrer battled for th e number-on e honors in the VetlSeniorclass a r cer Phil Douglas dropped out with a co lla psed rear wheel. Jon Melson. riding a 360cc Yam aha YZ250 in the Open cla ss. chased T elford in the first moro, while th e l25cc Pros - Mike Dunlap. Troy Welt y and Eric Sa mso n - were dicing for th e lead in the seco nd wave. U p front T elford was lead ing Melson. wh ile Welt y a nd Sa mso n took o ver th e firs, and second posi tio ns in th e 125cc dogfi ght. The Welt y/ Samson di ce carr ied them past Melson and up to th e o vera ll lead er . Telford. But Telford o pened up th e throttle just a little . . bit more and kept the two 125cc Pros at ba y. Telford held o n for the overall . while Welty took second (first I25ec) and Samson third. The second moto saw Melson pass T elford for the lead . whil e Welty began hi s dominance in th e I 25cc race. . . Melson led T elford for most of the rac e until . the Suzuki pilot eventua lly shot back into the number-on e position. T elford held on for the win ; Melson took seco nd, whi le Welty crossed the checkers in th ird for first place overall laurels in the 125cc class. ScheUenbergerwins Swan Motocross By Joyce Ladd . TYLER, TX. NOV . 26 Roy Sche lle nberge r rode hi s T eam Green Kawasak i to a 1-2 sco re for the overa ll win in the l25cc Expe rt class at Swa n MX. Chad Montero . aboard hi s Honda. blasted off th e ga te and to th e first turn in th e lead in mot o o ne. He was foll o wed by Yam ah a p ilo t j ason Langford. Schell enberger. Cagivamounted Bill y Whitley and Honda-mounted Allen Ross. During lap two Lan gford tried lO pu t a pas s o n th e ou tside of Montero, bu t ca ug ht Montero 's back wh eel a nd went down in th e berm. This dropped Langford into last pla ce. Montero had some bad luck as he went down in the switch back d ur in g la p three. Schellenberger gained the lead followed by Wh itl ey in second. Wh itl ey stayed glued to Schellen berger's rear knobbie and tried to go under Schellen berge r in th e turn before the camelback. But Sche llen berger powered hi s Kawasaki to th e checkers first. Taking second and th ird just a bike length apart were Whitley and Montero. Honda-mounted Allen Ross finished fourth and Langford posted a DNF. Mot o two aga in saw Montero take th e holeshot a nd gain a four-second lead during the moto. He was followed through the first turn by Langford. Schellenberger and Whitley. By the end of la p one it was Montero. Whi tley. Sche llenberger and Langford. Schel len berger was purring the press ure on Whitl ey looking (o r a n opening to pass. Then he bob bled in a turn which gave Whi,ley some breathing room. On the last lap Sche llenberger succeeded in passing Whitley. and with on ly two turns before the finis h line. they were side by side. But when the checkers came out it was Montero. Sch ellenberger. Whitley. Langford and Ross. Schellenberger took first overall for the day ; second overall went to Montero and third overa ll went to Whitley.
