Smith inherits Willow Springs win By Richard D~ Thompson ROSAMO N D, CA, NOV. 12 Georgian Mik e Smith was handed th e ARRA Miller Hi gh Life Formu la O ne win on a platter w hen a t the end of th e ra ce, leader Lee Shi ert s had a mech anical problem and was forced ou t of the race a t Willow Springs Interna tio na l Raceway. . At th e start it was Shiens rid in g a Su zuki GSXR 1100 a nd Barry Burke wh o left the oth ers behind. La p after lap th e two leaders went a t it full bore, with no o ne in co ntentio n fro m behind. Little did an yon e kn ow, ho wever , tha t a fter stall ing a t th e sta rt o r th e ra ce, Smith had his mind set o n winning and was picking off the o the r racers: " I pi cked them off three by three, " he said. . . Smith , rid ing a Suzuki GSXR750, sponsored by Yoshimura , The Wax Shop, R.K" F&L and Fox contin ued pick off the bikes betwee n he and the leaders, By th e seventh lap, it loo ked as if he had a cha nce o r ca tching Bur ke: " I knew Sm ith was ca tch ing u p, " Burke said. It seemed impossible tha t anyone wo u ld ca tch Shierts , as he continued to ga in gro und on the ot hers . Raci ng for the fou rth pos itio n were Cur tis Adams , Ken t Kun itsugu, Bria n Bernard a nd Kenny Kopecky . T he fourso me was clos e toge the r for th e ent ire race. Dal e Kieffer , o nce in th ird , 'was black- flagged du e to a leaking radiator. Kopecky at one poi nt felt the spray of the water an d had to pull back . Squeezing by Kopec ky, edging by Bernard, pushin g by Kunitsu gu and fina lly getting arou nd Ada ms, Smi th set his sights on Burke . Neari ng the end of the race , Sm ith got right up o n Burkeand reall y put the press ure on. Going into tur n eight, Smit h was just inches beh ind Burke. In 'urn n ine, Smith let it rip and the two wen t side -by-side dow n the fro nt straight. . "T he fro nt tire slid a nd th at sealed my fate," sai d Burke. "'I knew I couldn 't ca tch h im. " Smith, a fter havin g passed every ot he r racer, mo ved into second . Shier ts, then ex pe rienced a mechanical problem in tu rn one and pu lled off the track and o u t of the race. Burke tried to catch up but it was to no avai l an d Smith went o n to take the checkered '0 ~ z flag for the win. Burke crossed for seco nd a nd Curtis Ada ms finished th ird . Resu lts Bon UW: 1.
