Sulek slices competition atL.ACR MX By Terry Rezek PALMDALE, CA, NOV . 12 T on y Su lek ha s dominated th e 250cc Int ermedi ate class thro ugho ut th e Ca li fo rn ia Racing Club' s 2nd Annual Sponsorship Series and added yet an other pair of wins today at Lo s Ange les County Raceway. Sulek blew off 'he start line in moto on e and rom ped to 'he first mote win . Ga ry Lacy started in a tight second bu t co uld o nly watch as Su lek s,eadily pu lled away. Lacy go t th e edge wh en th e gate fell o n moto two a nd Sulek was o rr th e lin e in fourth . Su lek quickly moved up second and flashed to the lead o n lap two for another win , The series scoring ru les co un t the best seven finishes out of the nine ro unds in th e series. With today's win s. Su lek ha s six first s a nd chances are very high that he cou ld win the series even with out the final rat e. Todd Leh ma nn took the 250cc Pro class lead off th e line in moto o ne. Tim T elford was close behi nd and got mu ch closer over the next fo ur lap s. The co nstan l p ressure fin all y go t to Lehm ann near th e end of la p five and hi gh- centered in a soft hairpin turn. T elford was pa st a nd gone before Lehama nn co uld dig o ut a nd quickl y opened up a 10length lead, th en saw it redu ced to five wh en Leh mann gOt hi s rh ythm back. T elford held o n, winn ing the first mota with Lehmann seco nd. Telford took charge of mota 'two righ t o ut of th e ga te. going on for an easy mo w win and th e o verall. . In th e co mbined Vet Intermediate/Expert class, int erm ediates Charlie Strong and T odd Peterson wenl o ul on lap o ne jus t ahead of expert Randy T iulemi er. Tittlem ier went down briefl y a nd John Hateley went by for th e Expert class lead . T itt lemier was up and back in lh e race a lmo sl immediately but finished second in th e Expert class beh ind Hateley. II Geo rgie Pric e and Joe Whit e becam e the first re~at winners a s th e Balt imore Cou n ~y T ra il RIders/Cockeysvill e Optmist Club- sponsored series reached th e mid· point. Pri ce too k his second win in the 125s, while Wh ite took th e 360s. Other winners were Richar d Reeves in th e 250cc cla ss, Lew Wood s in th e 250cc Pro Class and Chuck Blessin g, who inheri ted th e 80cc win in o ne of the mo re excit ing fi na ls. The si x-ri der , six-la p Dash For Cas h, pining th e fastest 'q ua lifiers in each class plus the next fastest overa ll , has becom e a " Bas h for Cas h " , as more th an one r ider typi ca lly ends up o n the concre te as they bau le for the S80 winner's sha re of the purse, T o n ig ht was no differen t. as Dan Reichert jumped in to a quick lead o ver Steve Burkhold er , Charles Maj eski. Bob Sweeten a nd Georgie Pr ice. Price clipped Burkholder' s rear tir e as they cam e off the fourth 'urn, send ing the fast q ual ifier to the ground. He th en shado wed h is uncle, Sweeten . and dove under him entering the first turn o n th e nex t lap. Glusing him to fa ll. \Vhil e Reichert was o n hi s way to the win. Pri ce then fell o n his ow n in the Soeco nd turn. At th e lighting of th e green lig h t, Todd Winsett a nd Ken Co<,lbet h quickly jumped in front of the rest of th e 80cc field led by Blessing, Roy Miller and Paul Lyn ch . Fo r over 10 laps th ey battled. with Cool beth un ab le to find a hol e in Winsett 's lin e. As they were co m ing up to lap Coo lbeth's co~ si n . Morgan . Todd Winsett (foreground) and Ken Coolbet h raced for 12 laps before tangling at Mary land's Timoniu m Ind oor Short Tr ack. Wins ett's fro nt tir e touched his rear tir e. sending him do wn. Coo lbeth, with nowhere to go a lso wen t down. givi ng Blessing the lead wh ile they untan~led. They remounted to fini sh fourth a nd fifth , respectively. Kevin Varnes gra bbed the lead from Georgie Pri ce, Jerem y Lu cy and Todd Sti th at th e sta rt of the 125cc final. Varnes gave Pr ice the open ing he needed as he got slightly crossed up co m ing off th e second tu rn on th e thi rd . lap. Pri ce slipped under him as they exited turn four a nd iookthe lead ent ering the first turn. After that, the order stayed the same. excep t for L ucy clipping a tire with his ha nd two laps from th e end and falling. The 250s have been a sho w of veteran experience, a nd tonight was no diff erence as Reeves gra bbe d th e lead fro m previous winners Mike Mester and Reichert. Reeves managed to pull a litt le brea thing room durin g th e mid-stages of th e race. and he needed tha t cush ion as he bobbled sligh tly co m ing off th e fourth turn two laps from the end, p utt ing the Mester/ Reichert battle o n his rear wh eel. He held them off for th e win. Wh ite jumped out to a clean, two-leng th lead as they ca me 0(( th e second turn in the 360cc fin al, wh ile Rich Row e, Clarence Bu ll a nd Mark Burkholder slo wed each ot her down bri efly at the start. Bull passed un der Rowe a fter two laps, sending h im to the grou nd . Wh ile Wh ite slo wed hi s pac e slig h tly towards the end, Bull and Burkholder step ped up th eirs, finishing right on White's tail. By the tim e th e 250cc Pro s came to the lin e. th e a lmos t 1500 spec ta te s were primed for a ba tt le. After setti ng th e fastest lap time ever here in ti me trials (7. 18 seco nds ), Stev e Burkhol der was ra ted th e favorite. But his buddy Wood s had o ther ideas and timed th e ligh t perfectly, leading Burkholder, Scott Saunders, and Tom Majeski into th e first turn. For th e next 14 laps. both ran perfect lin es as they put severa l lengths o n the o thers . Sa unde rs had a sligh t bobb le coming off the fourt h ' urn on th e sixth lap , letti ng Majes ki and Rod ney Farris by in a flash. The racing was so intense that th e starter didn't wave th e wh ite flag until both Wood s an d Burk ho lder had pa ssed. For all n in e laps, the first five riders held their positions, Hod es followed by Team Gree n 's Roy Schellen be rger, Ho nda rider Ped ro Gonzales. Suzuki-mounted Cliff Palmer and Yamaha -spo nsored Jason La ngford. Mo ta two a ga in sa w Hodes pu ll th e holes hot and lead fro m start to fin ish. Hodes was foll owed by Kawasak i' s Terry T inney , Sche llenberger, Gonzales and Langford. By la p two , Gonzales had made his way pass Schellenberger for the n umber-three spot. But lap fo ur saw Sche lle nberger again m command of slot three. Schellenberger then began his charge on Tinney as th ey went ha ndl eba rto-handlebar .over th e jumps. Schellenberger kept th e pressu re on, but co uld n' t fin d an opening to get around Tinney. When the checkers ca me out it was Hodes, T inney. Schellenberger and La ngford.
