IN, NOV . 5 A seven in ch snowfall on Thursday evening did li ul e 10 det er th e 212 riders lrom seven sta les in shooting for the 50 pound live turkey ' ha t traditionally goes to the overa ll winner. The snow was go ne by Friday leaving the 110. 1 mile trail in its best condition in 18 year s. T he joint District 14/15 Shoot-Out showed why the 14 AA riders carry that classification, as only on e rider, H ig h Po int A, fourth overall, 200cc A rider Ken Brown, beat a ny of them. The Riders M.e. la id th e even t o u t with six speed cha nges 01 between 18 and 30 mph with 22 timed and observed chec ks 10 co nfuse and keep th e rid ers honest. Through check three it was [SDE pace rider KTM-backed Allan Ra nd t lead ing ISDE Gold Medalist, T eam Gr een -backed Kurt Hough by I I seconds, as both dropped one each at checks o ne and three. Four other AA riders had carded Ss. at this point to keep the pressure o n. Check four 10 five was a fast 5.2-mil e Turkey Creek River Bank section with o nly Hou gh and Jeff Fredet te snaring 2s. Section six to seven was co rn fields, woods, gravel pit , ski lod ge, mor e. corn fields and woods with speed cha nges to confuse and bU Tn th e riders. The AA riders didn 't bile and zeroed 'he chec k with most of the B riders still dropping poi nts . At th e first ~s, Hough was leadi ng Fredette , Ra ndt , and RIck Scharphorn by a sing le point, 4-5. The other two 19B9 ISDE riders Gary Hazel and Jeremy Garber had pr obl ems in the first sections. Haze l pi cked the wrong line in the " go tcha " woods before ' he Iirst check an d spent severa l mi n u tes extracting his 600cc Honda. Garber's odometer acted up rig ht off th e start lin e ca using him to stop for several minutes before the first check thinking he was hot , They picked up the pa ce 10 smo ke the later sections and tum in respectable sco res. In check eig ht 10 o ut-check nine, the longest complete woods sectio n of th e da y, saw Hough a nd Ra ndt check in with Ss. 174 seconds to 202 seconds.
