The race wa s a moral victory for Shierts, who finally put the salvage yard special in th e top three in th e final rac e of his rookie Pro year. The motor had blown in th e previous round o f th e series at T allad ega, Alabama, a nd Shierts had pulled a Iew a ll-n igh ters at AMI rebuilding it . " I' ve pushed that thing across th e fini sh line almost as m any times as I' ve ridden it," Shierts joked. But a ll was not ro ses for Shierts, as it was th e Sp ringer's Gold team of J ay Sprin gsteen a nd Fr itz Kling wh o o rigi na lly took th eir Yoshimur a Suzuki GSXR750 to th e winner 's circle. A scoring error had cred ited th e d irt track legend a nd h is tea mmat e wi th third pl ace, despite th e fact that th ree-t i m e G ra n d Nati onal Ch ampion Springsteen had crashed in th e first turn a nd fin ish ed th e race with a leak y cl u tch co ver. Sh ierts b rought th e di scr epan cy to th e scorers' a tte n tio n a n d th e results were quickl y amrnended, with Springer' s G old relegat ed to seventh place.
