c That w hat began as a quick ride North becam e a slow trip through our Landscap es of Perception. It was sunny and warm the morning my buddy Joh n and I set out on our backroads route. H e's a re-en try rider who's been off a long while, and didn 't want to deal with th e perils of Superslab. So we took it easy and just cruised. A nd stop ped. A nd th en cruised so me more. The pace was, yes, alm ost agonizing! Before lon g, it was taking way too' lon g. I got an tsy watching for h im in m y m irrors, going slower and slower fo r h im to catch up. But experience urged m e not to lose patience . I kn ew how a motorcycle cou ld be a handful in unaccustomed hands. So I went along with it. And found myself in sort of a Dream Ride, in kind of a fantas y trip where, lik e th e song lyri cs say, Everything Old Is N ew Aga in . I was being given a gift, abl e to see All that hurry and spee d normally blind us to. Su ch as, we ll - the certain alignment of farm fen ce boards. A nd how they followed the ir patterns, joining one another to make a whole. And more. I noticed th e varied and comp lex textures of roadside rocks. Even th e rand om arrang ements of cattle in a field . Th e part icular wa y grass bends w ith th e road wind. How rainb irds nourish a hi llside grove , and bequeath that cool rich scent of evaporating water. And up above, th e sudden thunder of a military jet working its thrust fo r a nearb y landing. And th en th e sp readi ng deep blue velvet of late afternoon ocean. With time enough as I rode to study the way seagulls w ill group and stroll togeth er, and to notice also th e lon e reflections of shore birds on surf-washed sand. It was great! My pal 's caut ion created an unlimited new world ofawareness fo r me. And, further, I saw again th e consummate difficulties of riding, all the critical ju dgements we sometimes forget, those myriad levels of sk ill necessary to survive. Sure, we got to our destination, and back again - by then it was p itch dark . And in the night's homeward traffic m y friend beh ind me looked like a one-eyed head on a rh inestone snake. Our ride seem ed to have taken us forever. But its rewarding effect was over much too soon. W illiam Edgar .....
