On Saturda y, th e amateu r s invaded the track and Steve Alt , Don ald Upto n a nd Roger Sae nz were just some of the day's clas s winners. A $4000 purse was on th e lin e for Su nday's Pro races, which attracted a la r ge turn out o f riders. Two q u al ifi er s a n d o ne Last Chan ce Qualifier were used to trim the field for o ne final mota. In th e first qualifier, the form er 125 and current 250cc World Champi on Bayle shot into th e earl y lead on hi s Honda and went on to take the win uncontested. Yam ah a rider Ryan Hughes mad e up for a so-so sta rt to claim second at the checkered flag , whi le -a no ther Yama ha rider Phi l Lawren ce finished th ird . Rou nding ou t the top five were Mike Pascarella and J immy Button. Heal ey blast ed to th e front of th e pack a t th e sta rt o f th e seco nd q ua l ifier with Yam ah a-m ounted Chad Pederso n and Micky Dymond in hot pursu it. As the race progressed, Dymond ope ned the throttle on his Pro-Circui t-backed Yamaha YZ250 and stormed by Pederson's Yam ah a. A h ot an d heavy dice between H onda rider Larry Brooks and T eam Gr een's J eremy McGrath ca rried th em past Pederson. Pederson dropped back o ne more positi on whe n Jim Ch amberl ain slipped by before the conclusion of th e race. H eal ey topped the mo to ahea d or' Dymond, Broo ks" and McG rath. H onda rider Mike H ooker earn ed the fin al tran sfer in the main event after wi n n i ng th e Last Chan ce Qualifier. ' When the gate dropped for the fin al , it was Dean Ma tson stealing the holesh ot th ro ugh a very crow ded firs t turn. But half way through th e first la p , Bayle jammed past Matson and into th e lead . Then Dymond and H eal ey mo tored into second and th ird. After th e second lap, Bayle had fall en back to sevent h pl ace with Dym ond lea d i n g th e wa y. Th e Yamah a rid er was chase d by Healey, Hugh es, Mat son , Brook s (who was ridin g a H onda CR 125 ) a n d McGrath. Heal ey was pr essuring Dymond but wou ld lose ground to the leader on th e infi eld section of th e track, wh il e Ba yl e wa s o n th e m ar ch towards the front. Also on the move was McG rath , wh o pi ck ed off Brook s, Hugh es and Mat son , but he was sudden ly comi ng under attack. McG rath , however, proved to be a problem for Bayle, as the young T eam Green rider was not budging an in ch from th e in side lin e. Lap after lap , McGra th fru strat ed th e French rider unt il Bayle slipped by into th ird pl ace. . While Dymond and Healey battled up front, Bayle closed in on the two leaders. Soo n it was a three-way dogfi gh t for the number-on e position. With three laps remaining, Dymond waved both H eal ey and Bayle by wh en hi s rear brak e bega n to fade. H ealey and Bayle went at it right to th e finish. Bayle would ap ply pr essure in. every turn , but Heal ey never gave in. The climax occurred on the last lap wh en Bayle tri ed to pas s Healey in th e fina l corne r. The two riders made co nt act, and from there it was a drag race to th e flag with H ealey just edging o u t the World Ch am pi on . McG rath held on for third with Hu gh es edg ing o u t Brooks for fourth. Dymond settled for sixth foll ow ed by Lawren ce, Pascar ella and Button . In th e Vet Pro race, Pete Murray swa p pe d m oto wi ns with Mark White for th e overall victory, wh ile Gary J on es, rid in g a KTM, finished th ird. Rou nding o ut the top five were former 500cc U.S. GP winner Mart y Moates and Yam aha-mounted Willie Amar adi o. G ary Chaplin rode a pair of flawl ess mot os to cla im the Vet Expert win , wit h Steve Rawso n pl ayin g bridesmaid with a pair of seconds. Robert Wil shire, Dale Anderso n and Robert Bland filled out th e top five. Mercedes Gonzalez took the' win in th e Women 's Expert c1 ass,leading Bonnie Warch , Tami Rice and Gail " MX Mom " Webb across the finish line. Nearly 200 ama teurs showed up for Saturday's event, whic h used a two-mo ta forma t. In the popular 250cc Begi n ner class, Danie l Woodman jumped o u t in front at the start in division two ahead of Max Spratt and Steve Alt. H onda-mounted All was the first to make a move after pa ssing Suzuki pilot Spratt o n th e first lap. Also o n th e move was Yam aha rid er Dan Fresh.
