Howerton hauls at SabanalHS By Tom Tysl SABANAL, TX, ocr. 8 Ken t Howerton topped a star studded Pro class a t round three of the Dunlop/Scott South Texas Winter Hare Scramble Series a t Sabanal. Howerton , Danny Storbeck, All ey Semar and Marcus Pepper, all Honda CR250 mounted, along with ' he ATK 406 of Steve Cardwell blasted into the firs' 'urn, dropping down to th e rocky Sabanal River bottom th at made up most of 'he 5.2-m ile 'rack set up by 'he Dirt Bike Club of San Antonio. It wa s Storbeck roosting past th e pit a rea first . sta rting th e second lap with six seconds on Cardwell. Pepper and Sem ar. Howerton came into view almost a minu te behind with a layer o f mud on his righ t side. Lap three saw Sem ar pit with a rear Oat a nd Pepper unload hard when a rock look away from hi s front wheel o n a fast downhill. Pepper rem ounted but soon pulled out to fini sh the aft ernoon riding an ice chest. Cardwell had a co mmand ing lead by lap five as Storbeck 's rear tire went n a t, leavi ng Howerton in second . Hard work in the pits had Semar and Storbeck back o n the 'rack but bo th had lo st a 101 of time. By lap nine Cardwell had ' he money a lready spe n t wi th h is pi t board read ing " big lead " but H ow erton was laki ng 15 seconds a lap from the leader. In the 250ec Expendass, Bob Weiss grabbed th e lead o n the first lap foll o wed by Estell e, Kenn y Dahlin, J ay Skidmore and Du ane Veeder. EsteHe pr essured \Veiss while Ja son Fletch er moved to thi rd a nd Veeder 10 fo urth. Estell e and Fletcher pa ssed \ Veiss o n th e fihh lap. The seven th lap saw Veeder move from fourth to second. pushing Flet ch er to th ird and Weiss to fou n h. Estelle led right to the finish.
