Coolbeth clobbers 'em at Trail-Way ST By Len Breech HANOVE R, PA, ocr. 7 Trail-Way Speedway brought the curtain down o n its 1989 short track seaso n. Ken Coolbeth became o nly the second rider in Trail-Way history to sco re a hat trick - three wins on three different machi nes in the same night. He a lso is the firs t, a nd probably only, Amateur to pull this off , taking the 85, 200 and 250Ccfinals, the latter lWO relatively easily over Mike Hacker. The Experts started to look lik e me: previous week 's race. 3 5 J ason Fletcher grabbed the lead in th e 250cc final , bu t fell on e lap lrom the end, giving Mike Varnes the win. He did stay o n two wheels to claim th e 600cc Pro-Am linal , while Geo rgie Price took the 600cc Expert race, with Max George toppi ng th e 750s. O n the third lap , Todd Win sett mo ved into th e th ird spot, g ivi ng the top three 10 the Expert-ra ted riders. Wh ile Ricky Win sett an d Coo lbeth were ru nni ng nose to tail . pulling away, Hacker went into fourth, and first Amateur. After pr obing for most of the race, Coolbeth slipped under Win sett down the bac k stra igh t on th e six th lap. Win sett stayed clos e, bu t Coolbeth took the win . The 250Cc race was next on Coo lbe th 's agenda. He go t a ra ther poor start, li lth behind Rich Mellinger, Hacker, Roberl Mill er a nd C hu ck · Bucha na n. H acker took th e lead half way im o th e secon d la p , as Coo lbe th bega·n to kni fe h is way through the pack, tak ing th ird by the end of the third lap . Jawn Fletch er looked lik e he was go ing to repeat hi s 250cc Expert win of th e pr eviou s week . as he quickly jumped in fro n t o f Mike Varnes. Georg ie Pri ce. Dave Lesn ia k. and a heated bailIe fo r lil,h. The top lour quickl y spread out, while T om Majeski, Kevin Varnes, Buu Ski les and David Miller baltled. On the seventh la p, Fletch er's high ·l ine style bit him , as his lro nt end slid out, giving Varnes th e wi n.
