But th e real winner today was Milwaukee, Wisconsin 's Scott lampac h , wh o se fourth-pl a ce fini sh enabled him to clinch the 1989 600cc Supersport titl e. The sta rt o f th e fin al saw Boca Raton , Florida 's Barnes take th e h ol eshot a nd lead into turn o ne foll owed b y Larry Schwarzba ch, Zampach , John Ashmead , Farmer and th e bal an ce of th e 19-st ron g, en ti rely Yamaha FZR600-mo u n led field. Ashmead pulled o u t o f Barn es ' draft but co u ld n ' t get by; h is fairing had co me loose a nd he was a bo u t to lo se it. Rentzell cr u ised on in for th e win as Farmer was ab le to dr aft by Barnes for second. " I had a cou p le of months off (d ue to injury) but I wanted to co me ba ck hard," sa id Rentzell , wh o's helped by Hollywo od Yamaha, Mich elin, Muzzy R&D, Fox , Dyn e-jet, Ara i, Tsubaki a nd EBC Brakes.
