Mexico, wh ere o n September 16, he a nd teammate Pau l Kra use won th e Gran Ca rre ra De Campieones 350. The Heav yweights a nd T eam Experts (;01 underway at 12:30 p .m . from a dead -en gine start. The approx im atel y 90 racers execu ted a Uctu m west to eas t aro u nd a pickup truck with Dan moore (Kaw ). Phil Brid gers (H e n) , Cary Co nd otta (Hon ), Stanaway (Hon ), and Skip Gi lm aur (Yam ) run ning o u t front. H a lfwa y through th e firs t lap, T eam Moore a nd Team Stanaway had reached th e strea m . cross ing bridge. Once acro ss, Jason Dahners (Ho n), Osrbo and Bridgers began to work th eir way a hea d. Back across a bridge 30 feet from the so u th -bo u nd tra il. Moore wa s d oe ly p ursued by the other fore runners. He tur ned mt o a narro w tra il wher e he wo rked his way th rough vast tree s. The co urse ca me back o nto open sand for a q uarter-m ile, turned up a 40foo t rise , slip ped do wn war d th ro ugh a mass of roc ks, and came 10 an abrupt halt as the ri der s' ta gs wer e p u nc he d by chec ke rs, sig n ifying the co mp letion of lap o ne . Eigh t mi nutes had elap sed. O n la p th ree, Ostbo narrowed th e ga p to with in a mi n u te of th e leader Dah ners. In tu rn , Kenn y Almquist (SUl) and Bridgers fo llowed si ng le-file. Ostb o was two mi nutes behi nd Dah ners o n la p five. He a nd Bridgers reac hed th e stream crossing si m ulta neous ly. Ostbo tri ed 10 force passage, but Bridgers d osed o ff th e bridge ahea d. ost bo fell th e bump. and found h im self tu mbli ng int o th e cree k. H e now had to pl a y ca tch -up. By th e eighth lap. Ostbo was tightening th e d istance be tween Dahners and h im self, as Br id g er s foll owed aggress iv el y wit hi n seco nds. At 2:02 p.m ., Dahners pulled into th e p its to hav e hi s crew sn ip o ff th e odometer. A fall in the rocks had kn ocked the ins tr u ment loo se and left it da ng ling. In th e meantime, O stb o wa ited ten sel y for h is tag to be pu nched. Dahners and O stbo excha n ged g lances as-t hey la id seige o n the- co urse. Dahners slipped a nd regai ned. exchanged the lead, a nd drew a hea d of Ostbo. At th e co m p letio n of a seven- m in ute lap. O stbo had taken teh lead. Dahners' o n ly cho ice was to continue in desperate p urs uit. At th e finish Dahners arri ved a t th e l ine 15 seco nds a fter Ostbo a nd th ird-place Brid ges pulled ill two min ut es lat er.
