Clear, coo l weather mad e for enjoya ble racing a nd grea t specta tin g as the 250cc Nov ice class lined up for th e sta rt o f th eir first moto. T erry Simmons timed th e:' sta rt-pe rfec tly and exited th e first turn 0 11 his Cycle Service Plus Kawasaki in the lead. Loca l favori te R.D. Partridge went down in nearl y the sa me spot as Daw son a nd tied up the entire closely- b u nc hed pa ck Cor severa l seconds, allowin g Simmons to pu ll o ut to a comfortab le ltl-second lead by th e end o f th e first lap. Clevela nd slipped by. Fitch and Pa tridge in to seco nd, but h is po sit io n was short-lived. Fitch made a charge at Partridge o n lap three . and took third away from th e Suzuki rider. The mom entum o f h is attack p u t Filch o n Clevela nd 's rear fend er. a nd Fit ch was q uick ly past a nd o rr after a distan t Sim mo ns. Partr idge also dispatched C levela nd. Fitch was beg inn in g to cu t in to Si m mo ns' lead o n the fo unh lap, but he' wen t dow n hard and finished fo ur th.
