Scott Stump of Marion, Ohio. is the 1989 AMA Camel Pro Series Rookie of the Year. Stump will rece ive a $5000 bonus from R.J. Reynolds and its Camel brand, while runner-up Chance Darling of Northfield, Ohio, picks up a $1500 bonus. Points toward the award were pa id to all eligible riders (ri ders who had not earned Camel Pro points prior to the ' 8 9 season) who qualified for Last Chance Qualifier races and fea ture events at the 16 Camel Pro Nationals. It seems the road race GP silly season i s focused more on teams than riders this off-season. While it appears that Giacomo Agostini will retain at least a portion of the Marlboro sponsorship, there is still a chance that there will be another Marlboro-backed team in 1 9 9 0. Reportedly, both Suzuki and the Erv Kanemoto /Edd ie Lawson teams have spoken to the tobacco giant regarding sponsorship in '90 . Rumors also continue to circulate that Kenny Roberts has had talks with Marlboro, but Roberts denies this rumor. Despite rumors of Ita lian road racer Luca Cad al ora' s switch to H onda in 1990, it now a ppea rs th e 250cc titl e co nte nder wi ll stay with Agostin i's Marlboro -backed team in 1990 a nd will o nce agai n ca mpa ig n 250cc Yamahas. According to da ily newspaper .reports from Australia , the A us tralian road race GP will move from Phillip Island in Victoria to a new. yet -to -be-co nstructed facility west of Sydney in New South Wa les. Race promoter Bob Barnard has agreed to stage the event at the new circuit and has signed an agreement for four years with an option for another five . Barnard was forced to look elsewhere when the V ictoria n government i m p o se d str ict t obacco sponsorship regulat ions on Phillip Island.
