That I did it lik e I'd don e it so ma n y tim es before. and kn ew it would never change. Mayb e it was Scott Parker's Perfect T en, plus Chris and Springer who started it all. Or, with their recen t flat track flash , at least they got it going again in m e. What ever it was, it was bumin '. That old desire of m ine , too damn lon g a desire. I was afraid to say it aloud - to utter th e nam e! Afraid th e dream would somehow go up in sm oke. That this Something-HypenSo m ething motorcycle vision would vanish! But when we got there and saw Oliver and Fred and all th eir new floor bikes, I knew it was go ing to be signed and sealed. And ready to deliver. A don e deal. That HarleyDav idson. There, I said it! And wrote the check. parted w ith those dollars! For m y brand new Low Rider. Brig ht Cand y R u by with Pullback Buck horns. Possibly th e purest of life's sins, cast in eighty-two cubes , riding in to th e N in eties. But isn't it the same with an y new motorcycle? Any year or decade, an y make or model? A n yurh ere l S u re i t is. Abso lutely! I t's t hat u niversally luminous gloss and m etal's caress that grabs us all . That fragran ce of hot cyl inders at th e end of our first hundred m iles. Th e p icture it pa ints in th e garage light on ce we've put it away. And our midn ight's dreams abou t ri ding it tomorrow , and tomorrow . And never to fo rget the .new friendships it' ll bring, the roads we'll find on it. It's an indu lgence that gives back by strokin g our ego or testing our sk ill. It can be good and bad and ex t ravag an t and efficient all at on ce. It is as alive as any machine we will ever know. And it can go beyond ourselves to help benefit others on char ity. rides, toy driv es, w h atever's worth y. Th is motorcycle we buy is a fla g for lib erty and th e human spirit . It is our eq u i tab le stan d again st being systems-controlled. Ou r own bold voice in th e blare of progress. T hat we ride safe and well is our unwritten goal.
