Bayle (111) was the only rider to really push Ward (5) in either 500cc motos. Bayle went 2-3 for third overall. Kiedrowski moved into the 125cc points lead at Budds Creek; he leads Cooper by six points and former leader Damon Bradshaw by 11 . 6 for the lead, which kep t the vocal cro wd on its feet. A fau lty starting ga te ca used th e first mo to to be red-flagged after o ne lap. T he second ' time around saw Suzuki 's J immy Gaddis stea l th e holesh ot a nd lead for a few turns before getting clipped by Kiedrowski o ver a double jump. Gaddis went down and dropped o u t of contention, while Kiedrowski took o ver th e lead a hea d of pri vateer H onda rid er Donn y Sc h m it, Su zu ki's Buddy Ant u nez, H onda rider Stacy Cook, Suzuki's Ronnie Tich en or , Parker, Ya mah a-m ounted Gra yson Good- man, Kawasaki rider. Keh oe, on th e othe r hand, wa lked back to th e pits and wai ted for the second mo to . Coo per was o n th e gas a nd shot into th ird pl ace by th e fourt h lap, making th e to p five Kiedrow sk i, Sc hmit, Cooper, Antu nez a n d Parker. H o t o n Parker 's tai l was Tiche nor. Run n ing in I I th was Team Suzuki 's J ohn ny O 'M ara , but he eventually pulled o ut of th e race with mech anical probl ems. By the fifth lap , Kied row ski , Schmit a nd Cooper were nearl y side by side, wh ile T ichenor slipped by Parker for fourt h. Cooper gave th e spec tators so me th ing to rea lly screa m abo ut when he stuffed hi s way aro und Schmit for second a nd then took over th e lead from Kiedrowski a lap later. As the race progressed, Cooper established a five bike-len gth lead , but near th e end of th e mot o Kiedrowski began ca tch ing bac k u p. "O nce Coo per got by m e, I watc hed h is lin es and saw that some of th em were a lo t bett er th an mi ne a nd I was able to reel h im bac k in," said Kiedrowski. . T he two were inc hes apart as th ey headed into th e last lap. A few turns la ter, Kiedr owski made h is mov e. " I p ulled alongside Cooper over a j ump a nd had th e inside line into the next corner," said Kiedrowski. " We came o u t of the turn sti ll righ t next to each other a nd I sq uared off the next off-camber turn and go t h im ." ·" H e set me up rea l good," sai d Cooper. " It was a grea t p iece of ri di ng, but I just wish it was me doing it in stead o f him. I went wide and Mike went to th e inside. I tried cu tti ng back in to go underneath him, but I was a gear too high a nd he pulled me to th e next turn. " Kiedrowski crossed the finish line with Cooper breathing down his neck. A few seconds back followed Tichenor, then Parker, Brooks, last week 's winner Kawasaki 's J eff Ma tiasevich , Yamaha's Mik e LaRocco and Larry Ward. With Bradshaw scoring no points in th e moto and Kiedrowski picking up 25, th e Honda rider found himself in th e series points lead. The second mo to was just as inten se as the first wi th Ma tiasevich jumpi ng into the ear ly lead with Kiedr ow ski second , Schm it th ird and Bradsh a w fourth. The Kawasak i rider led for four laps before go ing down. " I was setting him u p in a turn a nd I kind of tapped h im a little bit, and he went over the berm ," said Kiedro wski. Ma tiasevich recovered in fifth , behind Kiedrowski, Cooper, Larry Ward a nd Bradshaw . Parker, meanwhile, was running m id- pa ck before pulling o ut of th e race with sh ifting problem s. Kiedrowski and Cooper set th e pace for the remainder of th e race, whil e Br adsh a w d ro pped back sligh tly. T he two factory H onda riders chased each o the r right down to th e finish with Cooper gi ving it his best shot o n the last lap, but he came up a few feet sh ort. Kiedrow ski took his second win of th e day , with Cooper, o nce again , se tt li n g for a close second. ·Abo u t five seco nds back Bradshaw finish ed in th ird, while Tichenor, LaRocco , Matiasevich a nd Stephen son rounded out the top seven. ''I'm really happy th e way things turned ou t today," said Kiedrowski. " I' m just go ing to have to work teal hard during th e week and get ready for Unadilla. It's going to be a tough race, and the Championship is going . to go down to th e final moto." At th e awards ceremony following th e last moto, KTM made a special presentati on to T rampas Parker for winni n g the 1989 125cc World Ch ampionship. " I feel th at I let down a lot of people toda y; I j us t didn't do as well as I wa n ted to," said Parker. " I don't kn ow if I was as fast as th ose guys today, but I ga ve it 'loo perce n t. I picked up my bike just th is week a nd th e motor is abso lu tely stock, so they had abo u t five horsepower o n me. But that's rea lly no excuse, because if you a re go od you can win no ma tter wh at. " I' m really happy to be here," said Parker. " I turned down a $10,000 deal to ride a race in Eu rope, but I wanted to come here. The track was really goo d and th e crowd was great. .
