c That it was the " T wen ty-Fou r Hours of California" and I went with it Start to Fin ish. Her e came on e of life's perfect dreams! One of th ose chances you grab and run w ith, no matter w hat. It was Motorcycle Racin g 's best doubl e header. AM A Grand Nationals back to back! It began Saturday. For me, around six PM . Wh en most p eople were stepping out for th e n ight, or sitti ng dow n to su p pe r. In st ead , I was hurrying across clay - onto th e f lat tracker infield of Gardena's Half M ile. M y ex pectations up, heart pounding! H ey! Top G uns were on deck! Parker wa s there, Carr and Chandler, Spring steen and Mor eh ead and Davis and Graham . And when it got dark, Ascot's floods gave a studio look . L ike it was lit fo r camera . The way Orson Wells used to tint th ose black-&-white classics - heavy on shadows, swabs of hard light. A real film budget breaker. Because everything in m y lens looked so damn good! The night's racing lit erall y flew by, heat upon heat. And by th e time Scott y won th e Camel Challen g e and Chr is th e Ma in , m y p ictures added u p to a night too quickl y gone by. But wait! It reall y wasn 't over. N ot yet. not by a lon g sig ht. Because tomorrow was still that big rain-delayed M ile. T he whole roll ing thunder show was going north orl wheels. A six-hour drive in the night, all th e way to San Jose. And under a scorching Sunday sun the steel shoe riders went at it again. It was as if it had never stopped. And I began to sense what being on th e road with these men an d women of the Grand Na tional reall y was. I saw the true rhythm of it, th e sou l of w hat binds this way of living. Of w hat holds th is sp irit of am azing talent toge ther - th ese riders, tuners, sp onso rs, officials, fr iends and f am il y . Every bo dy involved! A nd I tried to p in some sort of label on it all , .but found I couldn' t. It 's far too com p lex a totality. It's lik e a single being, some Su per Organism. And to wa tch it wo rk in its myriad ways is to see one of life's best shots pla yed out. A nd then Park er put the cap on it, riding his ow n zephyr wind to ano ther Number On e Plate. H is dream was answered. And so was mine. William Edgar ....
