T ha t is, a ban g on the track tha t led Phil Collins to the victory in the series end ing race. Things pr oceeded ca lm ly th rough 'he 18 qualifyi ng heats. Series po int lead er Bobby Sc h wa rt z a nd Na ti onal Champio n Steve Lu cero wen t undefeat ed in th e preliminaries. That ga ve th em pe rfect. nine-point scor es. One point beh ind th em was cro wd favorite " Flyin' " Mik e Far ia. As always, the top 16 from th e heats moved into a series of (our sem is. The winner of eac h semi took o ne of four starting positions in th e main even t. . The first two sem is ca me off smooth. England's Phil Collins won over Billy " T he Bulle, " Hamill and Steve Martin in the first o ne. The second semi saw Fari a win from Brad Oxley, Ch arl es Ermol enk o and Scotty Brown. Calm ended on ce the third semi rode onto th e track. When the race left th e line th e fir st time, Lucero a nd vet eran Alan " Cra zy" Christian slammed into each o th er in turn one. Christian went down in a heap while the race carried on. Goi ng in to tum three, Lucero slid out and fell. Half the pack down on the first lap brought a com plete restart. The seco nd try did not go mu ch bet ter. Lucero stuck hi s front tire into Christian's cases in tum three a nd they went do wn in a wad. Try number three saw Lucero and Christian stay off each other, but th e other two riders, Walt Farnum and Shawn McCon· nell decided it was their turn and tangled in tu rn two . The fourth time, things went smoothl y, as Christian took the wi n wi th Lucero and Farnum followi ng. But McConnell fell by hi mself an d needed aid to get to his feet. The fin al semi saw Schwartz get . revenge on Eddie Castro for a defeat th e night earlier. In the co nsola tio n, Lucero had the initial lead but a hard-r id in g Hamill would not let him rest. The weslake-riding teen waited until tum two on lap three before driving ahead of Lucero for th e lead and victory. O ff the pole i n the main, Schwaru leapt into the lead with Christian, Faria and Co llins giving early chase. While Schwaru too k away SANDY, OR, SEPT . 10 Mik e's Suzuki-spon sored Ste ve Sm ith won the overa ll in th e Up The Hill class a ' th e Mou n tain Vi ew R a cewa y Mo to cr o ss in Oregon. At th e end of lap on e in the fir st mota Smith held a slig ht lead o ver H onda ride r Brent Dela y, but wh en Smith came by for th e second tim e Delay had dropped to sixth p lace. Taking over Delay's second pl ace was Honda ride r John Will iam s Jr. Sm ith increased his lead whi le Dela y tried to fight hi s way back through the pa ck. In th e end it was Smith ta king th e chec ke red flag with Williams second and Delay third. Delay had somethin g to prove in th e second moto and he did so by lead ing the race from start-to-finish. Smi th maintained his po sit ion ahea d of Willi ams to fin ish second in the mot o and loc k up th e overall for th e da y. The 250cc Begi nner cla ss featured some gr eat racing, some bad luck. a nd an unfortunate error . Honda rid er Gary Bren start ed the mote in fro nt, followed by fellow Honda rider Paul Gagner and Suzuki rider David Winters. In fourth, mean wh ile, was Honda rider Ken McArthur, who was chargi ng hard. McArthur passed Winters o n lap two an d set h is sights 'o n Gagner. Two la p s later , McArt h ur worked his way by Gagner a nd narrowed the gap between himself a nd Bren . After cha sing Bren for two laps, th e white flag cameou t a nd McArt hur inexplicably pulled off the track, securing Bren's first mota victory and allowi ng Gagner to fin ish second with Ra ndy Co lema n taking third. McArth ur explamed later that he had though t he'd received the whi te flag on the previous lap. In the second mo to , it was G agner taki ng th e early lead follo wed by Wint ers, Bren and Co lema n. Bren was successful in a seco ndlap pass attempt and moved ahead of Winters to ta ke over seco nd. The front four pos itions remained unchanged the rest of the moto, but behind them Wa h Wooley mana!;ed to recover fro m a ~r start and pass four nders to wind up in fifth for th e mo to as we ll in the overall sta ndings. G agner 's second mo to win was exactly what he needed to net the overall for the day . Second went to Bren w hi le Winters garnered third wi th a 4·3 showing. T ha t becam e clear wh en Fishback an d Mike " Mad Dog "Mazzacane co llided in the middle of the back chute o n lap o ne. Mazzacan e restarted the vent but Fishb ack , who sustained an injury to hi s neck and fin ger, was o ut, When the race restarted, Ferr ell put h is J awa int o the lead ah ead of Nutter. T omlin, in fourth, pu lled o ut befor e th e race reached th e halfway point aft er frr ing hi s clutch . Nutter stay ed clo se to Ferrel all the way . As they ca me off turn four and headed for the white flag , Nutter tried to sneak around the lead er. Ferr ell too k a look back, rea lized how clo se Nutt er was and turned o n th e throttle. He moved o u t to a small lead that he carried to th e checkered. Nutter fin ished seco nd fol lo wed by Mazzacan e and Billy Meist er. In IMS Handicap action, " Fast " Eddie Castro took the D&E Da shu gger /Mat 's Machine/STP Weslak e to the mai n event win . T he real action started in turn one on lap two. Don Odom and Tony Bienert went wide. Behind 'hem , Charles ErmoJen ko too k evasive action, a nd ended up getting tossed in the cush ion and tumbling 40 feet dow n the trac k. Castro rod e around the outside for the lead, but the ma n to wa tch was " Rad " Bra d Oxley. In his best 1989 IMS sho wing, Oxley knifed his way through the pack. Ox ley chased do wn th e diminutive leader o n the fina l lap , but he did not have time to pass. The first five finishers were Castro, Ox ley, Ha mill, Kevin Jo rda n a nd Bien ert. In Scratch raci ng , Bobby Schwaru again took hi s Budweiser Silkolene/C.T.I. Brace! STP/Astrodeck·sponsored GM to a co mfo rta ble win .
