Dahlin dusts Carlsbad IW. By Anthony Radoumis Raymond Roche won both World Superbike legs in Germany. World Championship Superbike Road Race Series: Round B Roche doubles in Germany By Kel Edge HOCKENHEIM, WEST GERMANY, SEPT. 9 For the second time this year , Raymond R o ch e took his Duca ti to victory in both legs of a World Superbike race , this tim e at West Germany's H ockenheimring. In race on e, the Frenchman had to fight off a stiff challenge from Belgian Stephane Mertens a nd fellow Frenchman Alex Vieira befor e luck helped him to his first win of the day. In the second leg, he ha d yet another titanic tussle, this time wi th Mertens and Italian Giancarlo Fa lappa before easing to victory by two seconds. The u ltra-fast circu it was ideally suited to the speed of Roche' s Ducati , and amongst the 100-plus entrants for the Superbike race, Roche was the fastest, gai ning the pole with a la p time o f two minutes, 9.58 seconds . T he fro n t row of the ~id was unusual in that all five bi kes were fro m different manufacturers. Joining Roche on th e front row were Mertens on a Honda, Davide Tardozzi on a Bimota, Patrick Igoa on a Kawasaki and Yamaha-mounted And ers Andersson. ' Race one 24 Roche got a poor start and balked Fabrizio Piro vano 's Yamaha coming through from the row behind. By th e time th ey came back into the stadium for the first time it was a trio of Hondas, local hero H ofman n leading Mertens and Vieira, followed by Roche. Beh ind these was another pack co nsisting of Andersson, Pirovano, defending champ Fred Merkel on a Honda, and Igoa . Soon, Hofmann found himself out of his depth and was passed by Mertens, Roche and Vieira. As the race progressed, it became a battle between Mertens and Roche. The Ducati was quicker comi ng off the co rne rs, but Merte ns was ha nging on, wa iti ng for his chance. J ust one la p from the end, the pace car came o ut of the pit lane just as Roch e a nd Merten s were co mi ng to the end of the grandstand straight. Roch e took adva ntage of the better lin e and shot through, while Mertens had to go the lon g way around the car, losin g nearly two seconds in the p rocess. Roc he took the victory by just one' second from Scott Zampach (2 0 4) leads Jed Kimla (185), Matt Winnacker (hidden) and Charlie Buse (39) at Blackhawk Farms. Winnacker won four races. Mertens, with Vieira in third , over six seconds beh ind. Pirovano and And ersson rounded out the top five, with American Mik e Baldwin on a Bimota finishing sixth. Merkel cou ld do no better than eigh th. Race two In blazing sunshine, And ersson got the holeshot a nd led into turn one , 'c hased by Birnota-rn an Fal a ppa, Mert ens , Merkel and Roch e. Roch e soo n forced his way up th e field and o nce aga in enjoyed a di ce w ith Mertens and Falappa. Roch e was taking it very ca u tio us ly in th e corne rs wh en he was near Fal appa as he did not want to cras h o ut on someone else' s beh alf, These three scra pped furiously for almost th e wh ole race until Roche used th e superior power of th e Du cati and began to stretc h out an advantage. This left Mertens and Falappa to battle for second place, th e position going to Falappa by just half a second at the flag . Merke l and Andersson had a treme ndous figh t for fourth place before the American stole ahead when Andersson's tires started to go off slig htly. Baldwin cam e seventh, o ne position ' shy of h is first-leg fini sh. Roch e's maxim um 10 points now p ut h im in cont ent io n o nce agai n for the title, an d 'we now also have a n ew championship leader in Mertens. When the gat e fell for moto two Saen z cha rged out to an ear ly lead bu t was quickly displaced by Tim Hallisay, wh o fini shed eigh th in th e fir st moio. Hallisay began 10 pull away as Dahlin edged out Sae nz for seco nd th en set hi s sigh ts on Hallisay. Dahlin was reeli ng in Hal1isay on every lap a nd was pressuring for the lead by lap four . Dah lin pow ered by on th e downhi ll whi le Hallisay seemed to run OUl of energy as he settled for second. Dah lin motored away for th e win a nd took th e overall victory wit h a 6-1 tall y. IS Su rf-n-Turf Honda-mourned Eric Sandstrom and T eam Green/Fairfield Kawasaki-sponsored Ray Crumb conquered the SOO a nd 250cc Pro cla sses, respectively , at the Sacramento Raceway Park Friday night Stadium MX ra ces. Sandstrom won both motes while Crumb survived a Iirst-moto spill 10 take the overall with a 2-1 score. Sandstrom rock eted into the lead o f both SOOcc Pro motos with perfect starts a nd stayed o u l (rant for th e wins while Concord Honda~ mounted Cl ayton Blood was forced to sellie for second each tim e for second overall. G8cB Kawasaki·mounted Sean Conley was in third in the early laps of moto one, but a still· healing ankle injury slowed his pace, and Bill Jamerson moved IllS Honda by to take third. Conley wisel y decided to sit out the second molO and Jamerson was again th ird for th e sam e overall.
