Yamaha's Doug Dubach came from third to win the 250cc Pro class. He wasn't so fortunate in the 125cc Pro class as he took a third. Denny Stephenson (3 60) held off Guy Cooper (10) for second in the 250cc Pro class, but Cooper topped Stephenson in the 12 5 cc Pro class. Dubach, Cooper claim Colorado Supercross wins By Mike Larson GREELEY. CO , SEPT. 9 Factory riders Doug Dubach and Guy Cooper took home victories in th e 250 and 125cc Pro classes, respectively, at th e 26 Co lorado Super cross Ch ampionships. In fact , th e visiting factory rid ers, includin g Kawasaki 's Denn y Step he nso n, claimed the top three spots in both th e 125 and 250cc Pro classes. Stephenson held o ff Cooper fo r seco nd. In addi tio n to the two big Pro classes, a full sla te o f Amat eur riders slugged it out for th eir sh ot at th e Stat e Ch ampionship titles. Heavy rain s th e day befor e the even t threatened 10 tu rn the track into a mud bog, but a lot o f hard work by th e E&M Enterprises' crew had the tra ck in good sha pe by race tim e. The race, spo nso red by Ni ssan a nd Boll e, is th e 5th Annual Brian Cason Mem oria l, in memory o f one of th e sta te's top mini riders wh o di ed of leukemia in 1984. The event 'drew more than 420 rid ers. At th e sta rt o f the IO-lap 125cc Pro main , Cooper na iled the hol eshot and led th e 24-rider pack around turn o ne, foll owed closely b y Co ok , Stephenson , D u ba c h a n d Tim Bu chli. The top fiv e riders all remained in close form ation through "the first three laps, with th e o nly cha nge being Stephen son passing Co ok for seco nd. La p four saw Cooper begin 10 put some di stance on Steph en son . wh o had pulled awa y slightl y from th e Cook-Dubac h battle for third. The next two laps saw no cha nge in th e top four spo ts. As th e leaders moved in to lapped traffi c on lap seven , Cooper managed to wor k h is way through th e slo wer rid ers a littl e quicker than Ste p he nson a nd put a little cushio n betw een him self and th e Ka wasaki ri de r. Cook and Dubach were still ru n n ing nose-to-t ail in an inten se battle for thrid , Dubach look ed for an .o pe ning , but Cook slammed the door o n him every ti me. Coo per held a sm a ll lea d o n tephen so n a t the beginnin g of.the fin al la p , but Step henson pi cked up th e pace a not ch a nd zeroe d in o n Cooper. Step he nso n kep t close ta bs o n Cooper, but ca me up a co u ple of bik e len gths short , as Cooper sailed over th e fin ish lin e jump first. Dubach mad e a last-d itch effo rt to get by Cook a nd it pa id o ff as he jammed by th e Fay Meyers H ondabacked rid er to cla im th ird. " I got a real good start," sai d Cooper. " And everything was workin g good. T he tra ckfwasn 't tha t slic k and the bik e was running grea t, I just stayed in front a nd had fun . T his is a lways a su per fun race a nd a ll th e Col orado people mak e it grea t, I'd like 10 come back aga in next year. " Stephenson got th e jump on the 250cc field coming o u t of th e .ga te and powered around turn o ne a head of th e pa ck. Cook follow ed closely in seco nd with Co oper, Dubach , Corey Cope , Buchl i and Kip Sa ndell in hot pu rsuit. Stephen son was po uring it o n , gett ing some breathing room o n lap two wh en Cook went down in a fast right-hand sweeper, almost taking Cooper a nd Dubach with him. Wh en Cooper clipped th e fallen Cook, he also nearl y went down, whi le Dubach just sq ueezed through and took over second. Cooper saved it and held o n to third. By lap four Stephenson was holding a sm all lead over Yamahamounted Dubach, who had Cooper right on his rear wheel. The top three had a safe margin on Cope, Sandell and Cook who were battling over fourth . Things soon tight ened , however. On lap eigh t. Dubach, who along with Cooper had gained co ns idera bl y, mad e hi s move a nd zip ped by Stephen son to grab the lead, but Stephen son a nd Cooper were still g l ue d to D uba ch ' s rear fender through the whole lap. Lapped traffic let Dubach pu ll aw ay from Stephenson and Cooper by a few bi ke len gt hs on lap nine, but -as the lead ers ca me to the line for th e white fla g, Cooper a nd Step he nso n ta ng led a nd Cooper fell. Th is was a ll th e ad van tag e th ai Dubach needed as he pulled away fro m Step he nson to cla im the win. Cooper was up quickl y a nd was able to hol d o n to the third pl ace spo t. Cook came back from hi s earl y race crash 10 fig h t o ff Sandell a nd Cope for fou rt h. " T h ings were real ti gh t," sai d Dubach . " I was able to get into seco nd a nd then I ca p ita lized o n a mistake by tephen son a nd got the lead. th en I just enjoyed m yself. " In th e seco nd 500cc Expert class mot o Keith Campbell sha do wed first mo to winner Brad Bolton during the first part of the race, then muscled hi s Yam aha YZ490 into th e lead and stayed th ere to claim the win. Bolton maintained a clo se seco nd for second o vera ll. Rob ert Ha nrahan , Dennis Hurlbut a nd Jim Eckert filled out the res t of th e top five o vera ll. The Mini Expert clas s featured a sta rt- to- finish romp by Kaw asaki pi lot Shawn Mo rga n. Morgan grabbed the lead at the sta rt of the main event and never loo ked back , co nsis tent ly sai li ng h is KX80 over the 60-foot quad jump that some o f th e 125 a nd 250cc Experts weren 't even clea ring. Alex Neir and Micah Moyes turned in good rid es to claim seco nd a nd third, respectiv el y. Mik e Thieman went home with the first pl ace trophy in th e 125cc Novice cla ss a hea d of Troy Smith, Don Zaswicki a nd Mike Walsh. Curtis Elworthy piloted his mini through th e mud in the afternoon races to grab th e go ld in the Pee Wee Amateur class, fo llowed by Rya n Clark and Nate Lesba ck. Results 50: 1. Seon Burris; 2.
